Srinagar, Aug 11: State Congress Sunday set up a five member 'Peace Committee' headed by State Congress Chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz to make efforts for restoring peace in Jammu region.
Sources told the committee was scheduled to visit communal clashes hit areas of Kishtwar on Sunday but postponed its program after Chief Minister expressed his unwillingness stating 'undesirable circumstances in Kistwar' as a reason. "The committee headed by Soz and compromising Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, Housing Minister Raman Bala, Revenue Minister Ajaz Khan, PHE Minister Sham Lal Sharma, MP Madan Lal Sharma, Health Minister Shabir Khan as its members were set up in a meeting where Kistwar situation was discussed," sources said. They said that the committee was set up with an objective to make efforts for restoring peace in the Jammu region. "The committee decided to visit affected areas on Sunday evening and called upon the CM after its setting up. However, the CM expressed his unwillingness to allow it to visit Kistwar stating that situation was undesirable," sources added. Confirming the development, Soz told: "It was after due discussions and consideration among Congress leaders that need was felt to set up the committee."
He said he was optimistic about visiting affected areas on Monday and appealed leaders of Jammu to come forward to maintain brotherhood and establishing peace and harmony in the region. |
