Will Kishtwar prove Omar's Waterloo?

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Aug 11: Even as deadly communal flames seem to engulf the already polarized state, the Chief Minister is unmoved. Not to speak of visiting the affected areas, he has not even sought a review of the security apparatus.
The Kishtwar incident has evoked severe reaction in the Jammu region with almost all the districts responding to the BJP sponsored band to call yesterday, the Valley is on a keg of gunpowder. The Bar Association has called for strike Monday and security experts have kept their fingers crossed.
The Chief Minister has issued just one statement on the crisis so far. He has clarified to BJP leader Sushma Swaraj that both the communities have suffered. A complaint filed by a Congress MLC accusing Omar's MoS of making a mess of the security apparatus by delaying imposition of curfew in Kishtwar on Friday has also gone unheeded. The results are obvious. Incidents of violence have been reported from some areas of Jammu. These incidents could have been avoided had the government acted on time and taken appropriate security measures.
While invisible hands instigate communal violence for their petty political interests, the authorities watch helplessly and thus become a party to the ugly incidents that happen across the state. Omar Abdullah has failed on all fronts and this time he has failed to preserve the secular fabric of the state. This, according to saner elements of the state, is an unpardonable sin.
There is no denying the fact that political parties other than National Conference have been making inroads in Jammu region much to the disappointment of the Chief Minister. However, Omar happens to be the Chief Minister of the entire state and not just of a particular region. However, the region where Omar gets maximum votes is more concerned about the unity and integrity of the state than party politics. This message has been conveyed in clear terms time and again.
The Chief Minister, it may be mentioned, will not do a favour to the people of Jammu and Kashmir by crushing the elements that caused the communal tension. Omar has to a ct and act very fast otherwise Kishtwar may prove his Waterloo.
