| Omar accuses BJP of polarizing people for electoral gains | | Kishtwar Clashes | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, Aug 11: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday defended his government's decision of bringing in army in the Kishtwar and the other areas affected by communal tension saying that situation would have gone out of control had the army not been called in to defuse the tension. Addressing a press conference, Omar accused some political parties of playing politics on the issue of communal tension. He said these parties instead of pursuing human values at this 'critical' juncture are playing politics thus adding to the already existing tension. He made it clear that no mainstream or separatist leader would be allowed to visit Kishtwar or any other affected area. "The flag march carried out by army after our request helped a lot in ensuring law & order in the Kishtwar area. The situation is by and large normal in Kishtwar town and credit for this goes to army. Our aim was to ensure that the tension didn't spread to the other parts of the Jammu province or to the Kashmir valley and we succeeded to some extent in this regard," said Omar. Omar accused that some of the political parties who want to re-create 2008 type situation in both Jammu and Kashmir provinces flared up the sentiments of people and this led to fresh trouble in different districts of Jammu region. He said these political parties are hell-bent on dividing the people on communal lines with an eye on next year's parliamentary as well as assembly elections. "These people want to polarize the people on communal lines so that they get advantageous position in both the parliamentary and assembly elections. We will not allow them to do so and as such we have decided not to allow any mainstream or separatist leader to visit the Kishtwar and the other affected areas. People should help the administration in restoring peace and tranquility in the affected areas," said the chief minister. Omar questioned BJP leader Arun Jaitley's visit to Jammu at this point in time and said that this is politically motivated and not to help the administration to restore situation. He said his appeal to BJP leader and leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj to ask his party unit in Jammu & Kashmir to help administration in bringing about law & order got wasted as the desired results were not achieved. The Chief Minister, while assuring that justice will be done, urged people to ignore rumours about the situation in Kishtwar and other affected areas. He however did not make any mention to his cabinet colleague and his MoS Home, who is being accused of deliberate inaction while perpetrators had run amuck in Kishtwar on Friday. The chief minister said that that government has already initiated enquiry into the incident of clashes between two groups at Kishtwar and added that the culprits behind the clashes and destruction of property would be booked and handed over severe punishment without any consideration. In reply to a question relating to the violation of ceasefire at LoC by Pakistan, Omar said that tension at borders has always been detrimental to the state and the people living in borders. He said that Pakistan should stop violating ceasefire and abiding by the agreement it had with India in this regard. |
