Women’s Equality Day celebrated at MIER

Jammu, Sept 3 : To mark the celebrations of Women Equality day, Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies, MIER organized a discourse focusing on the writings of renowned Indian writer MunshiPrem Chand. The topic of the discourse was "Women as portrayed in MunshiPrem Chand's Novels". The resource person for the programme was Prof. Reeta Jitendra, Former Principal Govt College for women, Parade. Dr Annie Koul HOD B.Ed welcomed the resource person and introduced her as an eminent social worker and an authority on gender issues. All the faculty members of the college attended the programme.
At the beginning of the programme, the customary Wall Magazine based on the theme Crime Against women was inaugurated by the resource person. Prof. Jitendra began by discussing the life of Prem Chand and said that man is mortal,he has to die but his works and contribution towards the society never die. Similarly works of MunshiPrem Chand speak volumes about the society. His literary works are always for its people and country. He has written around 250 stories, and in his stories he has reflected different roles of women.
Later in her remarks, Dr. Renu Gupta Director MIER, said that women have stood by their men in spite of all odds.They are resilient by nature hence they have faced exploitation over the centuries. She said that there is need to educate women so that they are aware of their rights and are able to develop their self worth and esteem.If a woman is educated she can educate the society and can help those who have lesser opportunities. She said that women must learn to value themselves first and develop a capacity for decision making and informed choices.
At the end of the session the resource person interacted with the male participants as to what was their opinion about providing opportunities to the women in their families and society. A formal vote of thanks was presented by Mrs. Monika Rathore, Project Officer CWS.
