| Police lets lose reign of terror on petty business owners | | Vendors allege extortion, Police refute | | Abodh Sharma Jammu, Sept 3: Tens of small business owners in Bikram Chowk area have been astounded by the tyranny of men in khaki who have reportedly raised the monthly booty from each one of them by several times. Many of these petty business owners divulged strictly on condition of anonymity that ever since the new I/C PP took over the charge of the chowki, he has let lose a reign of terror on them demanding double and in certain cases triple the money they had been paying Police every month till now. "Ration dealers, scrap dealers, sugar cane juice vendors, cement store owners, vegetable vendors and illegal liquor vendors have been asked to pay the monthly extortion according to 'revised' rates" said a vendor, adding, "many a vendors have decided to shift to some other location as they find the revised extortion rates too high." According to resources, two ration dealers in the area who had earlier been paying 2000/- per month have been asked to pay 4000/-; Two scrap dealers who had been paying 1500/- have been asked to pay 2500/-; Four sugar cane juice vendors who paid 1000/- till now have been asked to pay 2000/-; two cement store owner who paid 2000/- have been asked to pay 4000/-; Five vegetable rehris have been asked to pay 1500/- in place as 1000/- they paid earlier and vegetable vends have been asked to pay 2000/- in place of 1000/- they paid earlier. "The concerned I/C PP had issued dictates to his men to charge more from the non local vendors, but was pleaded by some of them to have mercy and charge them at par with the local vendors" said a non local vendor. SP South Rajeshwar Singh when contacted, dismissed the charges as baseless and said that the action has been initiated against large number of vends which have come up in front of DGP's official residence. "We have evicted them and there is no question of any extortion. If there is any complaint against any policeman or the office, it should be registered in my office and we shall get the guilty fixed". |
