| Govt fails to regulate fee structure, management fleecing people | | Politicians- private schools nexus | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 18: The mushrooming of private Schools In Kashmir Valley and failure of maintaining a check on their functioning and framing any broad based policy on fee structure by them has been a cause of concern for the people as some of these schools have been charging the annual fee ranging from Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000. Despite the claims of the Government to regulate the fee structure in private educational institutions in the State, no steps have been taken in this regard till date due to which these educational institutions are maintaining a monopoly by charging the exorbitant fee from the students. With government's total failure to regulate fee structure the management of private schools is fleecing the people in Valley. According to sources, the fee structure of some schools is equal to the private schools in Union Capital which instead of being educational institutions appear to be the business centres and commercial institutions and the whole motto of its management is mint money by hook or crook, sources added. Sources said the maximum of these schools are either run by the kith and kin of top class leaders of ruling alliance directly or indirectly who have been a main barrier in Government's move to make a legislation to prescribe the fee structure for these institutions. Sources said the medium class schools who were earlier charging a reasonable fee from the students have also jumped in the race and enhanced the fee structure and nowadays these schools also demand annual charges not less than Rs 25,000 as admission fee plus Rs 2500 to Rs 3000 tuition fee monthly. This has worried a common Kashmiri who has been placed between a devil and deep sea as in Government schools despite highly qualified staff the education facilities are poor due to lack of check from the Government while in private schools the highest fee structure has closed the doors for middle class people to send their children to these institutions. Sources said the nexus between politicians and management of private schools has also been one of the causes that the Government is tightlipped over the issue and it does not take the cognizance of brewing public resentment. Sources said the trend of charging exorbitant admission and tuition fee from students in Kashmir Valley has started over six -seven years now after the educational institutions of national repute opened their branches in Valley by tying up with the relatives of some influential politicians in Valley. Sources said the stoic silence, maintained by the Government has also been a cause of concern for the common man in Valley which has further added to public anger. The people have demanded that the government through legislation should fix fee structure for private education institutions by classifying them into categories and restrain them from making a monopoly in this regard, sources added. |
