| Azad's liking for PDP makes NC nervous, edgy | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 18: The veiled reference by Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad about possibility of Congress having post poll alliance with Peoples Democratic Party has made National Conference nervous. Senior Cong leader had said that Congress will be in the coalition government even after 2014 and it could form government with regional parties. Former Chief Minister, who has a sharp sense of political narrative of the State, had made this statement after assessing then ground political situation. According to Congress leaders, Azad said that in the context of dipping popularity of National Conference. As the Congress's own assessment, the NC is likely to suffer reverses in the next Assembly elections for sure, on account of mis-governance and rampant corruption. Congress feels aligning with the party which has been rejected by the people will go against the mandate and it could also affect the image of the party. Azad made the reference of PDP in the back drop of political calculation suggesting the party along with Congress is likely to gain from the last elections. PDP is likely to do better than the last elections in Kashmir and Cong could put up good show in Jammu region, though it also eyeing some seats in Kashmir. Cong leaders feel that forming a government with the part which would have improved its tally would not only reflect the acceptance of the peoples mandate but would also not bring the much necessitated change but would also help in maturing of democracy in Kashmir. Azad's statement would surely be not music to NC which has been trying having pre-poll alliance with the Cong at any cost. NC had taken a major chunk in negotiation after last Assembly election by taking CM chair for full six-year. Party feels it not only undermined the political space of Cong but also showed that it was reduced to play a second fiddle. After Assembly elections, Cong doesn't want to repeat it. After the last Assembly election results, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had said Cong didn't go through coalition dharma by not aligning with it and instead going away with NC. The Central agencies would also prefer and like to bring PDP in governance as it would keep the party in reckoning in Kashmir, which is must for Centre. |
