Police foil separatists' Shopian march | Journalists injured in clashes | | Bashir Assad Srinagar, Sept 20: Eight persons were injured in police action today afternoon when police and CRPF personnel resorted to cane charge and tear gas shelling in Nowhatta area of the old city as people started sloganeering after Friday prayers outside Jamia Masjid. Two prominent journalists also sustained injuries while covering the protest demonstration in old city today. The two journalist were identified as Tauseef Mustafa Photo journalist (AFP) and Press TV video journalist Ajaz Ahmad, both received head injuries. The trouble started when people assembled outside the Jamia Masjid and started marching amid slogans. As the protesters reached Rangerstop, a large contingent of police already deployed in the area cane charged to disperse them which followed by tear gas shelling. Police and the protesters pelted stones at each other and the violent clashes were on when the reports last came in. The protesting youth fought pitched battles with the security forces for quite some time before they were dispersed by the police. "At least seven people were injured Friday in clashes between anti-India protesters and government forces in Indian-controlled Kashmir" said a police officer. He said the clashes erupted in old city after troops prevented hundreds of people from marching to the southern town of Shopian. Clashes were also reported in the northern town of Baramulla. Police said the injured included two photojournalists and two policemen. Meanwhile authorities on Friday foiled the attempt of Hurriyat activists to march towards Shopian by putting the top leaders of the amalgam, including Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest. Hurriyat activists assembled at Jamia Masjid in old city and took out a procession raising slogans Chalo Chalo Shopian Chalo. However, police and CRPF men intercepted them near Babadem and resorted to heavy baton charge and teargas shelling to disperse them. Police resorted to baton charge at Hurriyat activists near Rangar Stop Lalbazar and dispersed them. A Hurriyat leader alleged that Police barged into Mirwaiz Manzil at Rajouri Kadal in old city and damaged it. "Some Hurriyat leaders have managed to enter Shopian," the leader claimed. Pertinently, Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had called for Shopian Chalo today to express solidarity with families of the youth killed in CRPF firing and to break the curfew under which Shopian has been reeling for the past 14 days. Meanwhile Shopian town in south Kashmir remained under curfew for the 14th consecutive day on Friday following killing of five persons in CRPF firing in two separate incidents last week. However, the district administration plans to relax the restrictions in the afternoon if the situation remains peaceful, sources said. Curfew was relaxed in Shopian from 4.00 PM onwards yesterday, the restrictions were re-imposed this morning as a preventive measure in view of the separatist call for the march, police officials said. |
