North Kashmir to throw surprises during 2014 elections | | | Javaid Naikoo SRINAGAR, Sept 20: As the fever of 2104 assembly elections seems to be taking momentum with every passing day in Kashmir, political parties are up against each other to gain public support openly and behind the curtains. Political circles believe North Kashmir has many a surpise in store for the politicians. The political assessment made by some prominent politicians of Kashmir for 2014 assembly elections in north Kashmir's Baramullah, Rafiabad, Sangrama, Gulmarg, Sopore, Pattan, Sumbal, Sonawari and Rajwara Handwara constituencies reveals that candidates who won in 2008 may not make it to the Legislative assembly this time owing to lobbyism and race for candidature in their respective parties. According to the assessment, National Conference (NC) is yet to find a suitable candidate for the Sangrama constituency. Similarly Shoaib Lone of state Congress is under attack of senior members of the area ,therefore they do not support him in campaigning which has already commenced. The weakness of NC and Congress infighting , it is believed, may ultimately pave way for victory of PDP's Basharat Bukhari. PDP senior candidate Moulvi Iftikhar Ansari also seems in a tight spot in his Pattan constituency. The Congress is still undecided here and the tussle between NC block president and another senior leader Abdul Rasheed Shaheen is adding worries for NC. If the mood of the people is any indicator, any candidate from parties other than PDP can give a tough fight to the Moulvi. In Sumbal Sonawari NC candidate Mohammad Akbar Lone has been facing wrath of the people for the past few months. A new batch of PDP in the area Yasir Reshi,Kawami Shilwat and Aabid Ansari are up against Muhammad Akbar Lone in the constituency to give him a tough competition while as Congress does not have a strong candidate available. The analysts believe that Taj Mohi-ud-din's increasing controversial profile over the years after remaining in headlines most of the times for different reasons has gained a large public support for ex additional deputy commissioner Raja Ajaz Ali who after his retirement joined politics. However he is yet to join any political party publically but his presence in the same constituency can be fatal for present health minister and like 2008 assembly elections nothing can be judged now. The analysts believe that two constituencies of North Kashmir Baramullah for senior PDP candidate Muzaffar Beigh and Rafiabad constituency for Muhammad Dilawar Mir can be considered secure for the party while as Rajwara Handwara constituency can give tough times to the chairman of newly formed political party, Awami Itihad by Engineer Rashid and chairman of peoples conference candidate Sajad Gani Lone. They said it would be worthy to watch if both the candidates in this constituency would contest elections separately or they would support only one candidate from either of the political parties publically and one among them would either move to any other constituency or remain silent during the 2014 assembly elections |
