| Respect through advertisements and disrespect in practice | | International Day of Older People | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 2: A paid advertisement issued to some newspapers by the Directorate of Health Services Jammu on the International Day of Older Persons makes an interesting reading. The advertisement is about the well being of the older citizens in the State and there can be no denying the fact that our elders deserve special treatment and respect in the society in addition to special attention for their physical and mental well being. That apart, the plight of our elders has been anything but pathetic because of the callous shown to them in government offices, banks, post offices and other places these people cannot avoid going to. The state Social Welfare Department gives monthly pensions to under privileged older people and destitute in the state, but for petty sums of the pensions the poor, infirm and helpless older people are made to sit outside the offices of government for endless hours. These people are pushed, ridiculed and shown disrespect by government officials since they have little to grease their greedy palms. It is one thing to oblige privileged newspapers through paid advertisements and quite the other to actually implement the spirit behind the International Day of Older People. It is a common sight that old pensioners are made to wait in queues in scorching sun and bone chilling cold to get their pension payment orders renewed. These people are often asked to submit proof that they are alive even when they stand in bone and flesh before the very officers who can themselves certify their existence. |
