Was opposition to ordinance Rahul's personal or peoples' view?
10/2/2013 11:45:21 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 2: When the Congress vice president, Rahul Gandhi, rubbished the ordinance aimed at shielding criminal legislators he had stated that it was all trash, needed to be torn and thrown away. While saying so he did not forget to call his fulminations against the ordinance as his personal view. And he was heard repeating that whatever he had stated about the ordinance it was his personal view.
And the same Rahul Gandhi is said to have told Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh,by way of his defence, in New Delhi on Wednesday that whatever views he had expressed on the ordinance were those of people.Luckily he did not explain which people, people from which area, people from which state, people from which religion or caste.Or was Rahul Gandhi's rage against the ordinance the outcome of opinion conveyed to him by MPs,legislators, who represent people ?
Reports from New Delhi indicate that there was no sign of remorse in the mind of Rahul Gandhi because his thunder against the ordinance had forced even the senior cabinet ministers and members of the Congress core group to endorse his views on the matter.
But during all these days, despite his hectic schedule in New York,a session with Barack Obama, another session with Nawaz Sharif, which was preceded by his thoughtful speech at the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister,Manmohan Singh maintained his calm. He maintained his graceful and dignified composure.
When mediamen asked several questions to Manmohan Singh about the controversy raging over the ordinance he simply stated "I am not a master of what people say. It has happened. When I go back I will try to find out the reasons why it had to be done this way and how we will handle it. Many feel that Rahul Gandhi, by registering his opposition publicly, when the PM was abroad, has undermined Dr Singh's authority. Responding to that the PM has said that he has seen many ups and downs and doesn't easily get upset. "I think, I have been used to ups and downs and I don't get easily upset," he has said. He silenced those who were demanding that he should resign following Rahul Gandhi's criticism of the cabinet decision by telling his critics that he was not going to resign.
Rahul Gandhi has shown some guts while describing a cabinet cleared ordinance as a trash needed to be torn and thrown away but he failed to display the same guts while defending his fulminations on the ordinance in his meeting with Manmohan Singh. He lied when he told the Prime Minister that he was simply airing views of people.
Whatever one may say in praise of Manmohan Singh one cannot deny the fact that Rahul Gandhi has emerged as the master of the ring. This is fully explained by the way the Congress core committee members supported the party vice president when they suggested to the Government to withdraw the ordinance. What is surprising about it is the fact that the core committee, which on Wednesday supported Rahul Gandhi's views on the controversial ordinance, was the same committee that had okayed the plan to adopt an ordinance providing for shielding criminal politicians against disqualification from membership of the parliament and the state legislatures and from contesting the elections.
