| Assembly unlikely to summon Gen VK Singh | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 2: The State Assembly is unlikely to summon retired General VK Singh to explain his statement about Army paying to ministers and politicians of the State. The National Conference has moved a privilege motion in this regard in the Assembly and even Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mir Saif-ullah has also urged the Speaker for this. "The Speaker most likely will not issue directions for summoning Gen Singh. The State government has already been communicated against this move by top officials from the Centre," said a senior Cabinet Minister. According to sources, the Centre doesn't want to rake up this issue any further as it has the potential of damaging it politically and also could antagonise the Army. "The relations between Army and people have been strained by rhetoric of the political class. Summoning former army chief and forcing him to face uncomfortable questions could have very bad effect on the morale and tradition of the Army and this can't be allowed to happen," said a senior official. Chief Minister has been communicated in this regard by top ministers and officials of the Centre. According to sources, Omar Abdullah has been told that while his party can rake up this issue for public consumption but not beyond. "Omar was allowed the space of raking up issue of Afzal Guru to prove his innocence. This time also he is directing his party to rake up this issue for some assumed public gains. But not beyond it as it has deep repercussion," said an official. Omar has been confronting the Army, at least in public, to project him as the sole leader who can take up with the largest institution of the country and trying to send the message that he is the sole guardian of presumed feelings of the people of the Kashmir. He had not been able to get his way on AFSPA and Gen Singh opposed his demand for removal even partially like a rock. Now he is trying to bring Gen Singh to the House, which commands and this time also he is unlikely to have his face. |
