| `Influential politician has workshop on by-pass' | | Civil society questions selective action | | Et Report SRINAGAR, Oct 5: The civil society in Kashmir is up in arms against the Government for sealing 11illegal business houses in Capital city Srinagar especially by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) by terming the Government move as highhandedness. Questioning the Government decision to seal the 11 business houses in Karan Nagar and Hyderpora area of the city by JMC, the civil society activist and veteran trade union leader Mir Ghulam Rasool said it was the Government which allowed these traders to establish the business houses in these areas after seeking hefty sum from them. Mir said by closing these business houses is a loss to the nation. He wanted a probe into silence of Municipal authorities when these structures were raised. Mir while taking a dig at the Government said it is the politician-officer nexus that has led to conversion of residential complexes into business houses in Srinagar city and construction of commercial houses in residential areas. Supporting him B A Dar another trade unionist and member of civil society said that the decision has generated a lot of resentment among the people as this is a way of corruption. He said why earlier these business men were allowed to establish their centres in the residential areas. He said Kashmir civil society will take the issue with Government and in case the decision was not rescinded it will be forced to launch agitation. Dar said already Kashmir is on a volcano and by snatching the bread and butter of the people the Government was playing with fire. He said instead of winning the hearts of the people the Government was alienating them further with its wrong and anti people policies. Mushtaq Ahmed Shah a social activist said that this is a ploy to harass the political opponents by Government so that they may not side with opposition parties in coming elections. He said while poor and marginal people are not allowed to establish their small business centres and denied permission by SMC or SDA the influential people and politicians are not asked to complete formalities for setting multiple business centres even in commercial areas. Mushtaq said in Parimpora area recently a structure constructed by a poor fellow to rehabilitate his unemployed children was dismantled while another person who had no influence in the Government was not allowed to set up his workshop on by pass road Parimpora and forced to sell his 15 marlas of land at throwaway prices by the authorities while a highly influential politician was allowed to set up a grand workshop and a business centre at the same locality within days by throwing all rules to winds. But the poor fellow sold his land after he was denied permission by SMC authorities to construct the workshop. |
