| Taj Mohi-ud-Din contradicts Prof Soz on extension of contract to NYC volunteers | | Says, no formal order received from Union Sports Ministry | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Oct 5: Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Taj Mohi-ud-din today countered Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President, Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz's recent statement that the contract of National Youth Corps (NYC) in the State has been extended by two more years. Responding to a supplementary raised by MLA Kulgam, Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami during the question hour in the Assembly, Taj said that no formal communication has been received from Union Ministry of Youth Services & Sports about the extension of NYC volunteers engaged in 2010. He said in the meantime 8,000 fresh NYC volunteers have been engaged by State Government as supporting staff in different Government departments. "Only Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh is authorized to extend the contract of NYC volunteers in the State since the scheme was started for the whole country and not Jammu and Kashmir alone. No such formal communication has been received so far and as such the contract of NYC volunteers engaged in 2010 stands culminated," said the Youth Services and Sports Minister. In his supplementary, Tarigami said the future of NYC volunteers is uncertain following the recent statement that their contract has been extended for two more years. He asked the Government to come clear on this issue so that the NYC volunteers are not 'deceived' further and they chose some other option as their career. Independent legislator from Langate, Engineer Abdul Rashid gave vent to his emotions while this question along with supplementary was raised. After being disallowed by Speaker, Mubarak Gul to raise his supplementary the independent legislator reached the first row where the Ministers are seated. He tore apart the question booklet and raised slogans while showing his disappointment over the ruling of Speaker. It would be in place to mention here that Prof. Soz had recently said that Union Ministry for Youth Services & Sports has extended the contract of NYC volunteers engaged in Jammu and Kashmir in 2010. Interestingly, the NYC volunteers association had also hailed the announcement and praised the role of PCC President in getting the contract extended for two more years. However, the reply of Youth Services and Sports Minister in the Assembly has dented the claim of Prof. Soz and come as dampener to the future prospects of NYC volunteers in the State engaged in 2010. The NYC volunteers had carried out agitation in support of their demand and also observed hunger strike while raising their demands. |
