| Employees' issue a prestige point between NC-Congress....? | | Standoff continues with unabated arrest spree | | Taj working against party 'policy' Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 5: With coalition Government and the employees on warpath over fresh developments post arrests made two days back, the standoff continues between the two sides as the arrest spree continues with thousands having been rounded up on third consecutive day today. While the 'arrest' game is only a cosmetic strategy to pacify the agitated employees, there is politics behind all this that is made to be seen on the scene. It is once again a point of prestige and a game of one upmanship between the two allies National Conference and Congress over the issue of employees' demands, mainly that of raising their retirement age from 58 years to 60. Well placed sources said the inside story in all what is being given to understand is that ruling National Conference is not ready to concede to this demand for apolitical reason, , no matter it has been putting forth the explanation of financial burden and harsh financial implications in a cash starved state. Sources said NC doesn't want this to happen with Congress as its ally right now, it knows Congress right from the time of Ghulam Nabi Azad's tenure as Chief Minister has been supportive of raising the age of retirement age of employees. In other words it is a known stand and policy of Congress that it wants this demand to be fulfilled. Whereas NC on the other hand is putting obstacles, even though it may want to do so, as it doesn't want Congress to share or take the credit for this crucial step which both the parties know well shall have huge political gains to their side in coming elections. Sources said even though the Government put the ball of engaging employees in the court of Cabinet sub committee, NC's job is being made easier by none other than the Congress leader and Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din, also a member who instead of toeing the Congress policy is speaking and following the language of National Conference in time not being ripe for conceding this demand. Taj, sources said is working much against the interests of the party and going against the directions of high command on every issue, the employees demands being no exception where he is following the NC directives, sources said adding that party leadership is however taking a serious note of this behavior, even though it is tightlipped and bound to maintain silence . Pertinently, it was nearly a month back, NC led coalition Government ordered setting up of a Cabinet sub-committee with a purpose to would engage employees afresh over their demands. Even though it was meant to start negotiations afresh with the employees, the move instead of being hailed, invited sharp reaction from the employees who are on warpath over delay in acceding their demands while they are seeking implementation of an agreement reached with this Government in 2012 over the demands. There were two rounds of meeting with the Cabinet sub -committee headed by Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather with five other senior Cabinet Ministers as it members. However, these remained inconclusive as the Government has nothing to offer on which it has already made a commitment and the employees on the other hand are not ready to listen to any 'compulsions' related excuses. |
