| Women flout traffic norms, prefer not to wear helmets | | Get leniency factor from traffic officials | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 5: The two wheeler riders, mostly girls, are not seen wearing helmets which is a common sight these days on the busy city roads. Despite several warnings and penalties imposed, this practice is going on unabated. Several times the female population of the city is seen talking on mobile phones and roaming around without the helmet which increases the risk of their lives. Females think that helmet is an unnecessary stuff and they feel uncomfortable while wearing it, so they avoid wearing it. Authorities also sometimes become lenient with them as they think they are girls and they avoid imposing penalties on them. Females are very skin and hair conscious, so in that pretext they prefer not using helmets. Revealing her compulsion for not using a helmet, Monika Gupta, a resident of Trikuta Nagar, said "She felt uncomfortable while wearing a helmet." Ambika Sharma, a student of Jammu University said, "Earlier I used to wear helmet but due to that my hair always got clumsy, so now I don't wear it as I couldn't take that anymore." Traffic Officials said, "Helmets are necessary for everyone to wear, even girls, as it acts as the savior for the people at the time of accidents. We cut the 'Challans' of all those who break this law. We don't even excuse the females for it." According to officials, they do their work without getting biased but around the city roads the scene is all different. Mostly males are punished for not wearing helmets but the females get a leniency factor and they mostly don't get clutched by the traffic officials for penalties. The statements given by officials are far away from truth and nothing like that is happening on the grounds. Most females are seen violating the rules and the authorities are not doing anything in this regard. Traffic officials said, "We don't get biased towards the females and impose fines on them also when they violate the rules. As women are careful drivers and they are intelligent so they do wear helmets." |
