early times report Srinagar, Oct 5: There are 9329 people in 13 prisons on Jammu and Kashmir stated the state government during the today's proceedings of House in summer capital. In a written response to a starred question posed by MLA Langate Er Sheikh Abdul Rashid, the Ministry for Home (J&K) has said though no person under Public Safety Act is detained in any jail outside the state but the government has 9329 people in its 13 jails. The reply also mentioned that there was, however, no detail available about the classification of the prisoners- those in jail for crimes and political detainees. According to the data given by the government, the central jail Srinagar has the highest number of 2673 prisoners. As per government data, there were 2075 prisoners in central jail Kotbalwal, 2673 in central jail Srinagar, 364 in district jail Jammu, 975 in Udhampur, 537 in Kathua, 184 in Rajouri, 172 in Poonch, 239 in Kishtwar, 1696 in Baramulla, 176 in Kupwara, 85 in Islamabad, 47 in sub jail Hira Nagar and 106 in sub jail Reasi. On September 16, the government has said 38 persons excluding foreigners are detained under Public Safety Act. Of them seven persons were arrested more than once. "The reasons for re-detaining an individual again under PSA is that they even after their release continue indulge in disruptive, seditious, and anti national activities because of which their remaining at large is deter mental to the security of the state and maintenance of public order" the response tabled in the house said.
