| BJP, CPI on the same page | | J&K a bilateral issue | | Rustam JAMMU, Oct 21: The Pakistan Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif's October 20 London statement that he would urge US President Barack Obama to intervene to resolve the Kashmir issue has evoked a very strong reaction from the BJP and the CPI. Both the parties, which represent diametrically opposite ideologies, spoke in one voice yesterday while condemning Pakistani attempt at internationalizing the Jammu & Kashmir issue. "There is no way in which India will accept any intervention on an issue that is entirely accepted in the Shimla Agreement as a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India and no one should raise a question on that. It is a waste of time for anybody, no matter how eminent, to be even trying to question it. India has already made it very clear that not just the Kashmir issue, but any matter between India and Pakistan would be solved only by the two countries, and no third party has the right to get involved. Nawaz Sharif's statement on US intervention is not accepted. He would like to tell the UPA Government that not only BJP, but the whole country is against American intervention. I appeal to Mr Obama not to interfere in this matter, and he should reject Pakistan's proposal (of US intervention)," said Murali Manohar Joshi, former BJP national president and former Union Minister. As for the CPI, its national secretary D Raja also aired similar views. He termed Jammu and Kashmir as a bilateral issue and asked "why should the United States be allowed to interfere in an issue which is being dealt with between India and Pakistan" "Pakistan Government should realize this. Islamabad had earlier tried to internationalize this issue but had failed," he was also quoted as saying. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid too said that "Jammu & Kashmir is a bilateral issue and India would not accept any US intervention, as the issue is a bilateral one agreed to between India and Pakistan". Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde also said the same thing. However, both the Union Ministers sought to underplay what Mian Nawaz Sharif said while making an attempt to internationalize the Kashmir issue. So much so, Khurshid said that the ceasefire has not collapsed. "I don't think that is true. There are many violations. It is a large number of small armed fires. It is unacceptable and certainly counter-productive. But I don't think we can at this point say that ceasefire has collapsed. That would not be a correct assessment of the situation," he said thus underplaying the Pakistani mischief. Khurshid not only virtually condoned the Pakistani crimes, but also did not refer to the Parliamentary resolutions on Jammu & Kashmir. The fact of the matter is that both Khurshid and Shinde disappointed the nation by not taking on Pakistan because of whose military actions along the LoC and International Border many people have started migrating to safer places. It was time to act fast and reassure the people that New Delhi would do everything under its command to prevent the people from quitting their homes and hearts along the International Border and Line of Control, but it has thought it proper not to attach any importance to what Islamabad has been doing to promote its anti-India agenda. |
