| Omar has a change of heart, urges New Delhi to act tough against Islamabad | | Says India can't be considered as soft target always | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Oct 21: For a change instead of talking about dialogue and reconciliation with Pakistan, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today asked New Delhi to look beyond the prism of peace and think of other options while dealing with Pakistan with regard to recent incidents of ceasefire violation near the Line of Control and International Border. Addressing the Police Commemoration Day function at Zewan in outskirts of summer capital, Omar said that the patience of India cannot be tested and taken for granted and it is important that a reply is given to the continuous incidents of ceasefire violation near LoC in the Jammu region. He said India can't tolerate the ceasefire violations made at will by Pakistan and has to respond with force if such incidents continue in future. "Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief has failed to keep his word in stopping the misadventures being made from across the border. Going by the recent incidents only two possibilities come out. These are that either Pakistan Prime Minister is fully involved in it or he has no control over the situation there", said the chief minister. Omar said that going by the recent incidents it seems Pakistan has taken India for granted and they believe that they can undertake any misadventure near the LoC and IB. He said that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was very forthright in putting across India's concerns during a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart in New York. "A mechanism had been worked out whereby the DGMOs of both countries would meet to discuss cooling of LoC and IB. Despite the meeting at the top level, Pakistan continues to violate the ceasefire and India can't tolerate it. Government of India will have to look at responding in kind. If they violate the ceasefire, we won't respond by words only," said the chief minister. Omar said that shelling of Pakistan forces has made the life of people living on LOC and IB in the state miserable. He said people have been forced to leave their houses, abandon agricultural activities and flee to safer places. He added that forces who are trying to destroy the lives of people living close to the border must be defeated. The chief minister while referring to Pakistan Prime Minister's demand for US interference in resolving Kashmir issue said that India will not accept any foreign interference since both India and Pakistan has also agreed on this. He said when Shimla Agreement was signed the basic principle to give up the third party mediation on Kashmir was accepted by both the countries. Omar said militant strikes against army and other security forces were due to procedural lapses as the Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) were not followed. He said had SOP been followed the militants would not have been successful in launching attacks against the army and other security forces agencies. The chief minister cautioned people against attempts by various elements on peace and tranquility in the state and said that the security grid should be more vigilant, alert and careful so that no chance is given to militants to strike. He said that security apparatus needs to be strengthened so that the anti-national elements are not given a chance to strike. |
