| Coalition apathetic towards reviving sick industrial units | | Existing units facing closure, Govt formulates new policy | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 28: Even as the State Government has fixed three months time to formulate trade policy, no comprehensive plan has been so far proposed by the coalition government headed by Omar Abdullah to revive the sick industrial units in Jammu and Kashmir. There are 457 sick industrial units in Jammu and Kashmir, the state legislative council was told on Thursday. According to official document there are total 457 sick industrial units but government has not formulated any policy to revive these units. Instead of making existing industry vibrant, the government seems to be interested in formulating new policies just for political mileage. The industry in Jammu and Kashmir especially in Jammu region has been facing lot of hardship but government is giving much attraction to expedite the process of industrialization. It is widely believed that there are political reasons in not taking effective steps to boost industry in the state. While addressing 24th industrial advisory committee meeting on October 24, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had fixed time period of three months for the formulation of a comprehensive trade policy for the state. It was announced that the Committee of experts should come up with a comprehensive proposal taking care of all issues relating to industrialisation, job creation and generation of wide-ranging economic activities in the industries, handicrafts, trade and commerce sector. It was also decided that to give industrial package to encourage investment by locals and outsiders should simultaneously aim at generating employment for locals in the industrial units. Shockingly in the meeting of advisory committee meeting no proposal was made to revive the sick industries To revitalise industrial activities in the state, the prime minister's task force had recommended setting up of a fund of Rs. 100 crore by the government for implementing a special rehabilitation package for the identified sick units. There are about 25,000 industrial units in Jammu and Kashmir including 150 large and medium scale units and rest small-scale -- 11,300 are in Jammu region and the rest in the Kashmir Valley. |
