| Indifferent attitude of NC, Congress intriguing | | Accession Day | | Neha JAMMU, Oct 28: Several social and political organizations and groups, including intellectual cells of the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus, organized impressive functions to celebrate October 26 as a great day in the political history of Jammu & Kashmir State. Some of the organizations organized seminars and debates not only in Jammu but also in New Delhi on the issue. Discussions and seminars on the great day of accession were organized not only on October 26, when the state that day 66 years ago acceded to India, and the splendid role Maharaja Hari Singh, his Prime Minister Mehr Chand Mahajan and the Home Minister of India Sardar Patel played in the process of accession, but also on October 25 and October 27. However, what has dumbfounded and surprised the people was the indifferent attitude of the NC, the Congress and other Kashmir-based and Kashmir centric "mainstream" political organizations. Neither the Congress leadership, including from Jammu province, nor any of the NC leaders, including NC working president and Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, issued any statement on the eve of or on the day of accession to hail the Maharaja's decision on the state's accession to India. One can understand the reasons behind the indifferent attitude of the NC towards the historic day or the conspicuous absence of any NC leader in any of the functions people held on October 25, 26 and 27 to celebrate the day. After all, the NC stands from the withdrawal of the Indian Constitution from the state saying the extension of the central laws and institutions has "eroded the identity of Kashmir" and "alienated" the members of a particular religious sect from India. One can also understand the reasons behind the indifferent attitude of other Kashmir-based "mainstream" organizations towards the accession day because their stand on Jammu & Kashmir is similar to that of the NC and the Kashmiri separatists. But one fails to understand what prevented the Congress leaders, especially from Jammu province, from organizing functions on the accession day to remember and appreciate the splendid contributions of Maharaja Hari Singh, Prime Minister Mehr Chand Mahajan and Home Minister Sardar Patel. Should one take their indifferent attitude to mean that they also endorse the view of Kashmiri leaders that the accession of Jammu & Kashmir to India was conditional or flawed? The Congress which claims that it is a national organization needs to make its stand public on the issue of great national import failing which the people would be constrained to conclude that the Congress and the NC are two sides of one and the same coin. |
