| Authorities forced to cancel Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service | | Pakistani troops resort to firing on LoC in Uri, JCO killed | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Oct 28: Hardly a day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed satisfaction that no ceasefire violation took place in the state, Pakistan resorted to indiscriminate firing in the Uri sector leading to the killing of a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) while as a soldier got injured in the incident. Reports reaching here said that the forces from across the border resorted to heavy firing during the preceding night in the Uri sector near the Line of Control in North Kashmir's border district of Baramulla. Following the incident, the authorities were forced to cancel the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service as a precautionary measure. Reports said that Pakistani troops opened fire at Bhim Post near Kaman Bridge on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad Road, resulting in critical injuries to JCO Prakash Chand and a soldier. The injured JCO was immediately rushed to an army medical hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Defence sources said that the deceased JCO was leading a patrol party when it came under an attack from the Pakistan side during the night. The patrol party was carrying out routine patrolling near LoC, when it came under heavy firing from across the LoC. The firing led to critical injuries to JCO who later succumbed to his injuries. The deceased JCO hailed from Uttarakhand and was associated with 8 Kumaon regiment of Army. The firing from the other side was retaliated and the heavy exchange of fire continued for more than an hour. However, there is no report of loss of life or injury to any one on the other side of LoC. Following the incident additional troops were rushed to the spot to ascertain the actual cause of the incident. The army said that it was not clear whether it was a ceasefire violation or the militant firing on patrol unit. The troops cordoned off the entire area and conducted search operation. Tension gripped among the residents of various villages lying close to LoC after the firing incident. As the firing incident took place during the night no one among the residents came out after the incident. Pertinently, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah had on Sunday expressed satisfaction over the let up in the firing incidents on LoC and International Border. Omar had hoped that the truce would last long but hardly few hours within his statement there was firing near LoC in Uri sector leading to the death of JCO. |
