What BJP did when it was in power? Opponents ask Khanna | BJP's crocodile tears on refugees' issues | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 29: BJP MP and Prabhari J&K Avinash Roy Khanna today castigated the Government for failing to provide basic rights to West Pak refugees till date but failed to explain what his Party which headed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at Centre for over six years did in this regard. Khanna who is in the city of temples here in connection with participation of Party's Refugee Adhikar yatra started last week from border city of Poonch addressed rallies in various border areas of Akhnoor tehsil yesterday and accused the Congress led UPA and J&K coalition for the plight of West Pak as well as PoK refugees. On reaching Jammu he addressed a press conference this morning before leaving for other border villages in Kanachak and Satwari area of the city in the morning along with Party leaders Dr Nirmal Singh, Bali Bhagat, Rajiv Jasrotia, Assem Gupta and Ravinder Raina. Khanna said these refugees are agitating since 1947 for their rights but to no avail, but stayed mute on what his Party did over these years in delivering justice for these hapless people except exploiting their sentiments. Some refugee organisations and other political parties while criticising the BJP move said that why BJP did not launch a massive movement for refugees' rights earlier and made it a national issue to seek justice for them. They termed BJP's rhetoric on their rights as political gimmick for the next year Parliamentary and Assembly elections. These organisations said that during the NDA rule headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee, BJP could have easily managed in making a consensus to settle the issue of West Pak refugees who have been deprived of citizenship rights since 1947 but obviously for various reasons Party remained silent on the issue despite the fact that NC at that time was the part of NDA and Omar Abdullah was a Union Minister at that time. Khanna also held the Union Government responsible for the plight of border people who have suffered a lot due to continuous Pak shelling. But again the BJP leader stayed mum on what his Party led NDA did in tackling issues of border residents when mass migration took place during the Kargil war and border skirmishes in 2001 when thousands of people had to migrate from border villages especially in Khour in Akhnoor and Hiranagar sectors. " Had BJP given a road map at that time perhaps the border people would have been relieved of the problem," they asserted. |
