Omar bemoans that J&K cannot become independent | Ireland-type solution | | Neha
JAMMU, Oct 29: NC working president and J&K CM Omar Abdullah, who questions the state's accession to India day in and day out in and outside the assembly as well as during his meetings with foreign delegations taking the controversial Congress-led UPA Government for a ride, is a broken-hearted Kashmiri leader. He vouches for a solution that grants independence to J& K, but bemoans that independence for the state is not possible. "The State can never be independent and will always remain under Indian sovereignty. The state is landlocked and lacks natural resources," he, according to PTI report posted from London, UK, said during his interview to the UK's Telegraph newspaper. During the outrageous interview, he expressed the view that "Britain's Northern Ireland peace process and devolution in Scotland could 'inspire' a future settlement". The PTI report said that J&K CM Omar Abdullah is of the view that the 1998 Ireland-type solution could satisfy the nationalist sentiment of the people of the state. "The peace process in Northern Ireland and the devolution in Scotland could 'inspire' a future settlement in which 'sovereignty is not threatened but you recognize the nationalist sentiment that exists and you evolve that," he, according to the PTI report, was quoted as saying. The same report said: "Omar was referring to a deal in Northern Ireland in 1998 which led to a power-sharing government after prolonged violence and the devolution in Scotland under which Britain created a Scottish Parliament with powers to make laws on a range of issues". It is clear from his interview that his approach towards J&K is no different from that of the Kashmiri separatists who want New Delhi to quit Kashmir. The only difference is that he and his pro-autonomy NC would be pleased if New Delhi, like London, could set up in the state a Scotland-type Parliament and grant powers which Scotland exercises within United Kingdom. He commits two crimes. One, he outrages the nationalist constituency in the state, which is very vast, by speaking for them. All sections of society in the state, barring the members of a particular religious sect inhabiting the Kashmir Valley, are out and out for India and vehemently opposed to the idea of the state even getting more autonomy, but to talk of independence. That the militancy is confined to a few pockets in the valley is not a secret. He committed another unpardonable sin when he equated Jammu & Kashmir, which is integral part of India, with Scotland and Ireland and virtually demanded a step short of complete independence. It is not for the first time that Omar Abdullah has gone beyond the constitutional confines. He has been doing so since years now. But the nationalist constituency is angry more with the Congress-led UPA Government than Omar Abdullah because it is the former that has given the latter the liberty to commit acts of sedition. Will the Congress leadership from Jammu and Ladakh muster courage, take on Omar Abdullah and his seditious NC and prove its pro-India credentials? If the Congress leadership from Jammu and Ladakh is sincerely convinced that Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India, it must snap all of its ties with the separatist NC. It would not be out of place to mention here that the NC has been causing more harm to the national interests in the state than Geelani and his ilk in the sense that it is subverting the constitution and polity both from within and outside. |
