| Certificate Course on Human Rights,Values launched at Mier | | | et report JAMMU, Oct 30: MIER College of Education launched the UGC sponsored Certificate Course on Human Rights and Values today at its BC Road campus. The chief guest of the inaugural function was Prof. DeshBandhu Gupta, Director, Colleges Development Council, University of Jammu. Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Dr. Arun K.Gupta, Chairman MIER, Dr. Renu Gupta, Director MIER, Dr. Adit Gupta, Joint Director MIER and Dr. P.L.Koul, Course coordinator. The course is a path breaking initiative by MIER of starting a three months value added course on Human Rights and Values, for which a large number of youth has responded positively indicating their eagerness to deal with issues pertaining to human rights and its violations. The programme commenced with the lighting of the lamp of human rights and values. Dr. Arun Gupta extended a formal welcome to the chief guest and other dignitaries and added that the launching of the course is a red letter day. He said that the Government of India is fervently inculcating awareness regarding human rights in all the sections of the society and what better way to achieve this than by enlightening the youth through educational institutions and MIER is a torch bearer in this regard. The course is all the more relevant in the modern context in which violation against the weaker sections of the society are escalating day by day, he exhorted. Dr. P.L. Koul, Course coordinator formally gave an introduction of the course. He said that education is the sole medium through which a positive change in the world full of malpractices and human rights violation can be brought about. He elaborated upon the objectives of the course, namely to make the students acquainted with Human rights and violations; to sensitize the youth; to encourage human rights awareness among teachers and students; to enable the students to come forward in protection of human rights violation; to aware the students about violations of human rights against the weaker sections of the society. Prof. Desh Bandhu Gupta gave the inaugural address and said that it is we human beings who are violating our own rights and we have to know if we are encroaching the rights of others. He said that we have a number of treatise and declarations, the first declaration being on 10th Dec, 1948 but these have to be followed in the right earnest. He also enlightened the audience about the meaning of Human rights. Every society has special value system and we should protect it from deterioration to save the society. Such type of courses and actions are required and MIER is doing a commendable job of creating the consciousness and the awareness among the student community.
