| Mir snubs Omar, talks about development, economic uplift | | Ireland solution | | Neha JAMMU, Oct 30: Democratic Party Nationalist (DPN) chairman and Agriculture Minister in the National Conference (NC)-Congress coalition government Ghulam Hassan Mir has the courage of conviction and the ability, capability and courage to tear into his own Chief Minister and say what is right and what is wrong. Yesterday, he lambasted Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his politics of rabble-rousing and told him to behave, instead of indulging in "political rhetoric". "Chief Minister Omar Abdullah should focus on development and economic uplift of Jammu & Kashmir instead of indulging in political rhetoric," he said while talking to a local news gathering agency KNS. "The economic condition of Jammu & Kashmir is very bad. Its leadership has to take necessary steps to boost the economic growth. 'We don't need the political rhetoric and should not talk of political solutions when the state is economically weak'. 'We have to turn towards New Delhi for everything, efforts should be made to make Jammu & Kashmir economically independent'. Political parties across Jammu & Kashmir should strive to make the state self-reliant state aside the political aspects," he was quoted as saying. What provoked Ghulam Hassan Mir to take on Omar Abdullah was what the latter said the other day during an interview to the UK's newspaper Telegraph. He had, among other things, said: "The State can never be independent and will always remain under Indian sovereignty. The state is landlocked and lacks natural resources…Britain's Northern Ireland peace process and devolution in Scotland could 'inspire' a future settlement…The 1998 Ireland-type solution could satisfy the nationalist sentiment of the people of the state. The peace process in Northern Ireland and the devolution in Scotland could 'inspire' a future settlement in which 'sovereignty is not threatened but you recognize the nationalist sentiment that exists and you evolve that". It is indeed surprising that while Ghulam Hassan Mir had the courage to take on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the Congress party didn't have a single leader to come out openly against Omar Abdullah and reject his high dangerous break-India formulation. But what Ghulam Hassan Mir said was expected of him. After all, he had been from time to time exposing the NC leaders, especially the Abdullah dynasty. The Congress has, it appears, lost the way or it has indirectly joined the NC to help Omar Abdullah and ilk destroy India in the Valley. Actually, the history of the Congress in Jammu & Kashmir is a history of betrayal of national interest. It has never considered Jammu & Kashmir an integral part. Had they considered Jammu & Kashmir an integral part of India, Jawaharlal Nehru would not have de-linked the state from the state ministry (Home Ministry) under Sardar Patel and attached the state to his own Foreign Ministry. The criminal silence of the Congress over what Omar Abdullah said should be viewed in this context. Kashmir needs leaders like Mir. It was not for nothing that former Army chief General VK Singh described Ghulam Hassan Mir as a right-thinking Kashmiri leader. |
