| Court records Hashim Qureshi's response | | Ganga Hijacking case | | S Sabaqat
SRINAGAR, Nov 9: A local court here today recorded explanation from former Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leader, Hashim Qureshi in connection with his alleged involvement in Ganga (an Indian Airlines plane) hijacking in 1971. Qureshi, who was present before the court of Principal Sessions Judge Srinagar, was handed over a questionnaire of 40 questions based on evidence produced in the case by prosecution. The court recorded his explanation under section 342 of CrPC. On next date of hearing on November 23, Qureshi will have to decide whether to lead defense evidence or straightway go for arguments in case. Qureshi served a nine-year jail term in Pakistan, after which he went to the Netherlands where he remained for 20 years, even getting citizenship of that country. His cousin remained in Pakistan after release from jail. On December 29, 2000, Qureshi was brought back to the Valley -- where he faces trial in the hijack case -- after his arrest in Delhi. The Government subsequently appointed Principal District and Sessions Judge Srinagar as special judge to hear the case under Enemy Agents Ordinance, 2005. Qureshi was founding father of the JKLF but later formed his own Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Liberation Party. |
