| Rahul's hint on continuance of alliance with NC ruffles feathers in Congress | | Senior leaders unhappy, see it as 'unwarranted' gesture | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 9: The broad hint by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in presence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that the alliance between their parties will continue beyond the 2014 general elections may have come as a reprieve for a desperate National Conference, it has left his (Rahul's) party in a state of disappointment . Hours after what Rahul indicated during a rally in Budgam on Thursday , it ruffled feathers in rank and file of Congress in J&K. Sources said Rahul Gandhi's friendly gestures in presence of Omar Abdullah did not disturb the Congress leaders in as mush as what he amply indicated that he is still to be a supporter of Omar and there is a Government both the parties are running together, an alliance which is likely to continue further. While the workers of Congress are perturbed over what Rahul indicated in his mind for repeating this alliance and support with NC, there are some senior leaders who matter in the decision making of the party at the state level who are not quite pleased with what may be in the mind of the party vice president. Sources said some of the leaders while expressing surprise and terming this as an unwarranted 'move' by the high command, have conveyed it to leadership that this would not augur well for the party prospects in the wake of the fact that workers and functionaries at the grass root level are unhappy , rather annoyed with National Conference for more than one reason which have been made known to New Delhi many times in recent past as well. Even some Ministers of the party are learnt to expresse displeasure in giving an impression to the NC that Congress was there to support it and wants to continue alliance with the party beyond 2014, sources said adding that this move was not only pre-mature in the present political situation when the ties between the two allies was strained over scores of issues. Sources said the matter is being discussed albeit in close door meetings by the Congress leaders as to how they would play down the indication of vice president's indication which goes in contrariety of the general mood of the party workers and supporters as an upbeat NC would try to gain maximum advantage out of this statement while they go to field for poll campaign, On the other hand, the Congress leaders feel any equation of Congress carrying the baggage of NC ties for next term would only prove damaging in the entire state. However, the leadership of the state unit is said to be convincing them it was not a formal announcement on that front nor have the two parties agreed so far on any such equation and therefore it was wrong to nourish any apprehensions, sources said. A section of Congress is also patting itself with the impression that more than Rahul Gandhi it was Omar Abdullah who tried to project the friendship tag that far while he asserted it a couple of times that NC was a committed partner of Congress led UPA to which Rahul only reciprocated with a decent gesture. NC is only misinterpreting this gesture as a nod for continuance of alliance, these leaders are stated to be conveying to their agitated cadres in respective constituencies. Some leaders, giving no importance to these interpretations , are in fact celebrating that Rahul Gandhi a day before rallies at Kashmir snubbed the Government for being obstinate on empowerment of Sarpanches, which they feel was essentially attack on National Conference. |
