| Who is to benefit from Katra expo? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 10: An advertisement issued by the Handloom department has urged the people to patronize and encourage the craftsmen and weavers by buying the products made by them at handloom expose at Katra. The message needs to be appreciated but only if some questions raised by the weavers and craftsmen are answered, what do the craftsmen and weavers get after making masterpieces? These poor souls do not even get peanuts. The trader gets all the benefits and the government especially the Handloom department knows it fully. The handloom sector has suffered a lot due to indifference of the concerned authorities. Therefore, by urging the people to purchase at the handloom expos, the department is actually promoting the traders who employ the weavers on a meager amount and make a fortune for themselves. Before talking about the patronage and encouragement of the weavers and craftsmen, the department should have launched schemes for their welfare. They continue to suffer today the way they used to suffer seven decades ago. Launch some schemes, give soft loans to them so that they earn an honourable living and escape exploitation by the traders. |
