| How Omar’s right hand man tried to gag media? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 10: The Chief Minister had on Saturday said that it was difficult to gag the media. "The media has grown strong and it is very difficult to gag it," he said. However, the government's love-hate relationship with the media narrates a different story. There have been attempts to gag the media during Omar's regime. The onslaught started during the budget session of the Legislative Assembly in 2010. For the first time three breach of privilege notices were issued against scribes in a single session. Noted journalist, Ahmad Ali Fayaz's disclosures about former Chief Minister's advisor and chief whip of National Conference, Mubarak Gul on February 28 in Early Times surprised one and all. Fayaz was directed to explain his position. Soon after, renowned cartoonist of the state and Editor Srinagar Times, Bashir Ahmad Bashir was also summoned to Jammu for similar reasons. He had published a cartoon in his daily depicting `sad state of affairs' in the Legislative Assembly. Bashir was in high spirits and desirous of going to Jammu to defend his cartoon. However, he was later told that his presence on the floor of the house was not needed. He welcomed the decision of the honourable Speaker. Another respected editor, R S Gill had to appear before the speaker to defend a breach of privilege motion against him. Gill also stood by his story `Best Legislator V/S Upright Principal' published in The Northlines on March 25, 2010. And who can forget the onslaught on Early Times in July 2010? The press was sealed, editor's residence was raided and the Chief Minister's most trusted lieutenant misused his official position to muzzle the press. He engaged the land mafia to grab land owned by the Early Times editor. He even misused the Police and Excise departments. On the directions of Omar’s right hand man the Early Times is being treated as a second class newspaper as far as release of advertisements by the Information Department is concerned. |
