| JSM demands rechristening of Agriculture University of Jammu | | | Et Report Jammu, Nov 18 : Jammu State Morcha in a meeting held today under the presidentship of Virender Gupta asked the State Government to rename the Agriculture University of Jammu against the name of a great Dogra legend and folk hero of farmers who fought against injustice and land-lord system and sacrificed his life for the cause. The Morcha also demanded to name Jammu -Akhnoor road as Bawa Jitto road and construct a memorial in his honour somewhere on Jammu- Akhnoor road side. It also asked the Government to construct a spacious complex at Jhiri with all the facilities and amenities required for the stay of Yatries. Jammu State Morcha is of the opinion that the proposed package of Rs 7000-crore for one time settlement of the compensation of the POJK displaced persons of 1947 and of 1965 and 1971 (from Chhamb) is inadequate to meet the genuine grievances of the refugees. The Government cannot compensate the sufferings and for the near and dears who lost their lives in communal turmoil of 1947 but it must compensate to some extent the losses of their belongings, at the present existing rates. The quantum of compensation per displaced family should be at least Rs. 20 lac. The unregistered displaced families should also be given chance for registration. And those families who before migration were existing as separate families but forced by the circumstances to live together after the migration be treated as separate families for grant of compensation. JSM demanded that all the groups/ organizations of refugees consulted before arriving at any decision on the amount of compensation and on other issues. It was unfortunate that the parliamentary committee constituted for the purpose only met few individuals and self styled leaders of refugees who were not aware of the refugee problems. Morcha asked the State Government to place a resolution in the State Assembly for granting State citizenship rights to West Pakistan refugees. Their suffering are enormous as they have been debarred from enjoying the benefits as State Subject of Jammu and Kashmir even after more than 65 years, even though they are citizen of India. It is anomalous that a person who migrated from the State in 1947 and presently holding Pakistani citizenship can be considered as State Subject. Others present in the meeting included H.B.Khajuria, Chandra Uday Sharma, V.D.Dogra, Ram Parkash, Nathu Ram Gupta Devender Singh Jamwal, Subah Sharma, R.C. Gupta, Rajinder Gupta, Surjeet Singh, Vishav Bandhu Gupta and B.M.Kohli |
