| Article 370: NC thinks Modi has given them vital pre-poll issue | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 5: BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has given an issue for the ruling National Conference and the opposition BJP for using and exploiting during their pre-poll campaign in the next Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections. NC sources said that "We had no issue for wooing voters and Modi has allowed us the scope for exploiting the BJP's support for abrogation of Article 370." They said that by raking up "no tampering with state's special status" the National Conference leadership would be able to fight the anti-incumbency factor. When reminded that voicing opposition to abrogation of Article 370 could harm the party's interests in the Jammu region, NC sources said that "we need to consolidate our position in the Kashmir valley which has 46 Assembly constituencies and if we win 30 to 32 seats from the valley, we will be able to retain power." Sources indicated that top NC leaders have been directed to fulminate against the BJP in general and Modi in particular on Article 370 issue so that the National Conference was able to build a wave in its favour. Field reports said that the BJP, which has been reeling under the split and had become a rudderless organization, too has decided to exploit state's special status so that it could build a pre-poll wave in its favour in the Jammu region. A senior BJP leader said that since the Jammu region has been "our stronghold we need to concentrate in the 37 constituencies in the region." Reports said that the NC leadership, led by Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, have already started building a campaign on the basis of the BJP's favour for abrogation of Article 370. |
