| Crores of NREGA funds misappropriated in Valley | | 'Corruption perpetuating turmoil in Kashmir' | | ET Report SRINAGAR, Dec 5: Crores of rupees being received from centre under NREGA schemes for employment generation in the State go down the drain as maximum works are being done on paper and not on ground. According to sources, the money received from Centre on NREGA schemes is not properly utilised and 80 percent of the amount goes down the drain with maximum works not existing on ground but in papers only especially in Kashmir Valley. Sources demanded a high level probe into matter as the people for whose benefit the scheme was framed have been deprived of its benefits. The main purpose of the scheme was to benefit the rural poor by providing them the employment opportunities but the authorities at the helm of affairs have made a mockery of the entire scheme and instead of giving advantage to people at grass root level its benefits go to some engineers bureaucrats and politicians. "Government has perpetuated a loot in the name of NREGA," said People’s Conference leader and veteran Trade Unionist Mir Ghulam Rasool. He while making a scathing attack on the Government said that the restoration of irrigation canals was made in the rainy season instead of that period when the water level is low in the rivers and the canals can be restored properly by clearing all muck and silt from them. He said in various areas of Kashmir instead of cleaning the canals in the month of November or December the silt was cleared and restoration done in summer when the water level is high and only for the sake of restoration some laborers are being engaged. He said 20 percent funds are being spent on ground and 80 percent go down the drain. He said records are fudged and money is being swindled and in the years crores of rupees have been looted by the state rulers on the name of the scheme. Mir demanded a high level probe into the NREGA and punishment to guilty. He said public exchequer is being looted on the name of NREGA. He, while expressing concern over the growing corruption in the State said all funds received from the centre go down the drain as the engineers, bureaucrats and politicians are the direct beneficiaries of the same while the common man is left high and dry. He said rising corruption has been the cause of the turmoil in the State as the few ruling classes in the State were benefitted after looting the State over the years. |
