| In a bid to appease Valley, Center joins discrimination drive against Jammu | | Rs 22 cr for DD Kashir, Rs 2cr for DD Jammu! | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA
JAMMU, Dec 5: Inertness of the Center towards the sustained discrimination that the Jammu region has been subjected to by successive state governments for over six and a half decades has aggravated the pain and anguish of the people of the region. However, it is amplified further when Center itself discriminates against Jammu region to appease the valley. Believe it or not, the height of unfair treatment to Jammu region by the Center could be gauged from the fact that the Union Government provides a paltry amount of Rs 2 crore only per annum to 'full-fledged' Doordarshan Kendra, Jammu for running its affairs while its counterpart Kashir Channel is getting hefty amount of Rs 20-22 crore annually. This startling revelation came to fore through senior Congress leader and President Dogra Sadar Sabha, Gulchain Singh Charak, who was addressing a press conference here today at Press Club. Alleging discrimination with Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) Jammu in budget allocation, Gulchain Singh Charak today sought more funds for DDK, Jammu as well as launching of an exclusive 'Duggar Channel' for the people of the region. Charak demanded that Government of India should maintain balance in budget allocation for Doordarshan Kendras being run in the state including Jammu and Srinagar. "There should be parity in funds allocation for two Doordarshan Kendras of the state… While DDK, Jammu is receiving funds worth Rs 2 cr annually, its counterpart Kashir Channel is getting Rs 20-22 cr per annum and they can seek more funds as and when required… This huge difference in grant of funds is nothing but a cruel joke with the artists as well as people of Jammu region," Charak said. "Union Government must provide financial support to DDK, Jammu at par with DDK, Kashir", he further said adding "The DDK, Jammu is only a make-believe Kendra as the budget is too meager to call it a full-fledged DD Kendra as it lacks Programme Generating Facility (PGF) and an OB Van besides it is telecasting programmes for four hours only," Demanding 'Duggar Channel' from Government of India, Charak said that the launching of such an exclusive channel will cover a vast portion of the state as well as the neighbouring states and areas across the border much more than the presently being covered by Kashir Channel. "Around 32,200 Square Kilometre of area will be covered if a Duggar Channel is introduced which is anytime more than the area of about 22,200 Square Kilometer being presently covered by Kashir Channel… The Duggar Channel can generate and telecast programmes in Dogri, Punjabi, Gojri, Bhaderwahi, Kishtwari, Pahari, Mirpuri, Urdu and Kashmiri languages," Charak asserted. "Introduction of Kashir Channel was no doubt a good move… It was launched with the objective of countering the Pak propaganda but over the years it has lost its purpose as it is catering to limited audience since a low percentage of people across the border understand Kashmiri language where as the Duggar Channel could be viewed not only in parts of J&K but also in adjoining states of Himachal and Punjab as well as in areas of Pakistan where a large number of people speak and understand Dogri, Punjabi and other dialects being spoken here in J&K." Charak demanded that DDK, Jammu be brought on Satellite and Direct to Home instead of Earth Signal besides treating 48 casual labourers working in Kendra as temporary employees. |
