Mir inaugurates post harvesting Turmeric Processing Unit at Kana chack

Kathua, Dec 5 : Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir has said that strenuous emphasis is being given to reach out at the doorsteps of the farmers with the aim to educate them about latest cultivation tactics for increasing the production and productivity of different crops. The Minister today visited Kana chack, Chackdhari villages of block Barnoti in Kathua. During interactive session with farmers at one day awareness programme conducted under ATMA scheme by the Agriculture Department at Barnoti, the Minister apprised the farmers about benefits of the various initiatives like Soil Health Services, Mushroom Development scheme, Apiculture Development Scheme, Kissan Credit Card and organic farming.
He said that the objective of the awareness camp was to sensitize the farmers about latest farming techniques and to provide them useful information through Subject Mater Specialists and Resource Persons to yield better farming results. The Minister while speaking on the occasion said government has initiated several steps to ensure timely availability of quality seed and other farm inputs to the farmers. He disclosed that over 10,000 quintals of seed has been provided to the Kathua district this year which is an increase of 3000 quintals to the last year supply. He appealed the sarpnachs and panchs to submit timely projections of the seed requirement of their respective panchayats so that no farmer shall be deprived of quality seed. Mir emphasised on the need to exploit the measures like check dam in tailend areas to meet out the need of irrigation water. MLA Kathua, Charanjit Singh while speaking on the occasion said that kathua district has largest cultivable land and added that farmers should also cultivate other cash crops to improve their earnings.
Ajay Khajuria, Director Agriculture Jammu, in his welcome address said that department has made efforts to keep a check on the yellow rust wheat disease in the area. He said department is providing high yielding seeds, tools , implements besides information to the farmers about the latest agriculture techniques and practices.
Earlier the Minister inaugurated a Post Harvesting Turmeric Processing Unit of progressive farmer Dhunda Singh at kana chack sponsored by Agriculture Department under RashtriyaKrishiVikasYojna (RKVY). The Minister also visited Agriculture Business Centre at ChackDhari where farmers apprised him about the benefits they availed by using latest agricultural tools and implements available on rents through Agriculture Business Centre.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Kathua Rajesh Kumar, Ex MLA Dhian Chand, Dr K.S Rissam Director Extension SKUAST(J), Susheel Sahani, Joint Director Agriculture (Extension), Chief Agriculture Officer Kathua, Mushroom Development Officer Kathua, Sub Division Agriculture Officer, Sarpanchs and Panchs and a large number of farmers were also present on the occasion.
