| Ian lays foundation for sure J&K win | | | .
Sports Reporter JAMMU, Dec 16: After a dry run in first two games of the season, Ian Dev Singh distinguished himself with improved performance hitting magnificent 170 runs against Assam in the ongoing Ranji Trophy Group-C tie at GGM Science College Ground, here today. Making a beginning from overnight individual score of 94, Ian not only completed his century but pushed J&K total to new heights of 427 in 129 overs. This young vice-captain hit three sixes and 14 boundaries thereby helped hosts take a big 164 runs first innings lead. In turn, J&K bowlers left Assam tottering at 156 for six in 43 overs in their second innings. The visitors still trail by eight runs with four wickets remaining when stumps were drawn. However, G Sharma and AN Ahmed resisted the J&K bowling attack and stretched the innings adding 54 runs for the seventh wicket partnership. Both these batsmen were batting at 32 runs each. From J&K Ram Dayal and Samiullah Beigh were the most successful bowlers, who shared two wickets each. Earlier, Umar Nazir hit the first blow when he took the wicket of Roy with just four runs on the board. Earlier, J&K could not give a good start to their innings and lost Samiullah Beigh at the same individual score of 65. However, retired hurt yesterday, Mohd Dar joined Ian Dev to steady the innings. Dar made 23 runs. It was followed by responsible innings from Ram Dayal (16) and Mohd Muddassir (13), who provided the much needed support to Ian by keeping the one end intact.
DG reviews arrangements for School Games
Sports Reporter JAMMU, Dec 16: Director General (DG) Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), Navin Agarwal (IPS) today reviewed and finalised the arrangements for the upcoming 59th National School Games in under-14 (boys and girls) Volleyball in a meeting held at Youth Hostel Nagrota here. Accompanied by Deputy Director, DYSS, Ved Parkash the DG had a detailed discussion with the conveners of various committees and their members to review the arrangements for the sporting extravaganza. In all, 42 teams, including 22 boys and 20 girls, have confirmed their entries for the competition. For the comfortable stay of the teams and smooth conduct of the competition, the GD issued strict instructions to the already nominated conveners of such committees. In the meantime, Navin Agarwal interacted with the players and officials of the host teams. Seeing the enthusiasm and energy level of the boys and girls, the Director General hoped for excellent performance of the host teams. Prominent among others, who attended the meeting included District Youth Services and Sports Officers (DYSSOs), Dr. Sawarn Singh, Dewan Thakur, Jarpal Singh, Swami Raj Kotwal, Tirath Ram, Sunil Kumar, Mohd. Ayaz Khan, Sukhdev Singh, Subash Chander.
Sports activity held in RM Public school Sports Reporter JAMMU, Dec 16: RM Public School, Chowadi, Sainik Colony, the Sister concern of Shiksha Niketan has rapidly emerged as an institution that churns out achievers both in academic as well as in sports. Today the pre-primary wing participated in the sports activity. All the classes of pre-primary wing were divided into groups named after flowers. Nursery class had divided into two groups named Lotus and Rose. The tiny tots played "Pick the hanker Chief" in which Rose won the competition . Similarly, L.K.G. was divided into-Marigold and Lily in which Lily was the winner. Whereas U.K.G. class was divided into-Sun flower and Jasmine were Sun flower was the winner. The tiny tots performed so well even their teachers Sonia Padwal, Jyotsana Jamwal, Nancy, Mamta, Seema Jamwal and Gurjeet Kour were also appreciated for their efforts and hard work by the Principal Ravinder kour and Vice Principal Shashi Jamwal. Refreshment was distributed among the students as a token of love by the Management. The whole event was organized by the Administrator Meenakshi Sharma and Pre-primary coordinator Pooja Padwal.
Senior National Fencing meet starts tomorrow Sports Reporter JAMMU, Dec 16: The 24th Senior National Fencing Championship, organised by the J&K Amateur Fencing Association, shall start from December 18 at Indoor Complex, MA Stadium, here from December 22. In this five-day event, around 700 male and female fencers drawn from various states and belt forces shall compete for the top honours. This was disclosed by president of the Association, MJ Sharma while interacting with newsmen, here today. He said, "All the necessary arrangements have been finalized for the comfortable stay of the visiting teams and smooth conduct of the competition. Different committees have been set in place by involving senior players, officials of the Association as also those senior officers of the J&K State Sports Council." "The competition shall take place in three different events of Epee, Foil and Sabre in both men and women sections. Besides team events, the open competition shall also be held in this championship wherein fencers from Indian Army are also taking part," informed coach of the state team, Shotu Lal. The competition shall be declared open at 11 am on December 18 at the Indoor Complex. It will be followed by the competition at two sepearte venues established within the Indoor Complex. Earlier, the selected team underwent screening conducted by the State Sports Council at MA Stadium, here.
Saroori inaugurates Cricket tournament at Udhampur Sports Reporter Udhampur, Dec 16: Senior Congress Leader and MLA Inderwal, Ghulam Mohammad Saroori today inaugurated the cricket tournament "Christmas cup" here at Udhampur. The inaugural match of Cricket tournament Christmas cup was played between Knight Riders Udhampur and Friends Cricket Club-11. The tournament kick started by Member Legislative Assembly (MLA), G M Saroori in a well attended opening function. He interacted with the teams playing in the inaugural match and lauded the efforts of chairman organising committee, Rajan and also Christian committee Jammu for making the event a regular feature. Friends Cricket Club-11 won the toss and elected to bat and made 67 runs in 10 over's. Chasing the target Knight Riders Udhampur easily chased down the target and made 68 runs. Knight Riders Udhampur won the match by a 6 wickets. In this tournament 20 teams from across the Jammu, Udhampur, Chennani, Nagrota, Ramban and Kathua will participate and the tournament final will be played on Christmas day. The winner team Knight Riders Udhampur was given a Trophy and cash price were given and Runner up was given a Trophy by Chief Guest Ghulam Mohammad Saroori. Satish of Knight Riders Udhampur was declared Man of the Match for securing quick 43 runs. He was given a Trophy for Man of the Match. While addressing players Saroori said Losing or winning of a game is immaterial but participating as worthy sports persons, performing to once best capacity and maintaining quality of conduct while playing is counted a lot at the end of the day. "Our boys and girls are none to anyone", Saroori said adding that they need proper opportunities, coaching and exposure to prove their mettle. He said that for this purpose creation of sports temperament and encouragement to the players is essential. He said the tournament like Christian cup would provide opportunities to the players to excel and be seen in the IPL and other National tournaments. Saroori also congratulated the Association for the initiative and hoped that such tournament would not only provide wholesome entertainment to the players and spectators but also go a long way in strengthening the bonds of fraternity. Prominent among those Chairman Auqaf Tehsil Udhampur, Shakeel Shah, Congress Leader Mansoor Ahmed Mattoo, Prominent citizens including Ashu Sharma, Abdul Rashid, Dr. K C Sharma and galaxy of audience were present to see the inaugural match at Udhampur. Earlier, in his welcome address, Rajan presented a brief note of the tournament amidst introduction of the oragnising committee to the chief guest. The tournament motive is to bring people across the other region closer to each and to develop and encourage sports culture in Udhampurr, and remember Anwar Hussain brother of Rajan who died some couple of years ago.
Self goal by Ashique haunts J&K Forest J&K Bank wins 2-0 amidst violent play Sports Reporter JAMMU, Dec 16: The technical officials had tough time to handle the top professional sides of arch rivals, J&K Bank and J&K Forests with former making it a 2-0 win, amidst violence in the ongoing 4th Sher-e-Kashmir Gold Cup Football Tournament, organised by the National Conference at GGM Science College ground, here today. Red and yellow was the call from the centre referee, Vijay Malhotra, who had left with no other option but to turn strict to control the boys. While Rohit Kumar of J&K Bank and Nasir of Forests were debarred from playing in the next game showing them red card, Zubair, Nigerian Ezikol and Aman Thapa were given warnings through yellow. Filled with anger, Ashique Mushtaq committed a blunder when he netted a self goal in the 66th minute providing an opportunity to Bank to build-up pressure. One goal up, J&K Bank made it two in the 76th minute through Johney Kumar and then kept the ball moving from one end to other to emerge 2-0 winner. The indiscipline was buzz word in Forest side, who continued their violence outside the field too. Soon after the match ended, a senior forest player hit a blow on J&K Bank boy leading to ugly scene. Meanwhile, the organizers took a strong note of the indiscipline of the J&K Forest team and have warned of a complaint with the higher-ups of the Department of Forests. Now, J&K Bank shall take on J&K Power Development Corporation in the final on a later date.
MIER College of Education celebrates Energy Conservation Day et report Jammu, Dec 16: MIER College of Education celebrated Energy Conservation Day to create awareness among the staff and students regarding conservation of Energy Resources. About 50 students of Environment Education Unit of MIER College of Education participated in the interactive session conducted on the occasion. Dr. P. L. Koul, OSD MIER chaired the session. Monika Bajaj, In-charge Environment Unit, initiated the session saying that energy is the most important component of our life and we cannot afford to waste this essential resource. Hence we all should device and implement ways and means to conserve it. She also extended a warm welcome to all present. The students participated enthusiastically and put forth their views before the audience on the conservation of energy resources. They urged the audience to use practical measures to conserve energy like not to iron wet clothes, use timer facility to save energy, use car pooling system, not to overload the appliances and to get all appliances serviced from time to time, replacing of old appliances, use of rechargeable batteries etc. While speaking on the occasion, Dr. Koul said that we must conserve energy for sustainable development and should use the resources judiciously otherwise all energy resources will be exhausted. He also added to the suggestions given by the participants. Dr. Koul urged the students and staff of MIER to take a pledge to use public transport or bicycle at least once in a month. Dr. Adit Gupta, Jt. Director MIER group of institutions appreciated the initiatives taken by the Environment Unit to spread awareness about pertinent environmental issues.
