| Beig predicts doom for Congress in Jammu | | 2014 elections | | Rustam JAMMU, Dec 16: Former Deputy Chief Minister and PDP's ideologue Muzzaffar Hussain Beig in December predicted doom for the Congress party in Jammu province and surprisingly also sided with APHC-M chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and accused JKPCC chief of "trying to buy the interests of the Kashmir University students". "Though our sympathies are with the Congress but like other parts of the state there is a Modi wave in Jammu as well. I have apprehensions that this wave may completely wash away Congress in the region in both Parliamentary and Assembly elections, he said while speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a rally in Shangas, Anantnag. A few days ago, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had said that leaders like Saif-ud-Din Soz had been trying to convert the Kashmir University into a "hub of mainstream politics". "I support Mirwaiz for his statement. It is Saif-ud-Din Soz who for his political gains has been on forefront to convert the university into political ground. He is trying to buy the interests of students in which he will not succeed," Beig said. One may or may not appreciate the statement of Beig on the JKPCC's role as far as the University of Kashmir is concerned, but the people would readily endorse his view on the Modi impact on the Jammu province's political scene. He did not exaggerate things. He only made a statement of fact that "I have apprehensions that this (Modi) wave may completely wash away Congress in the region in both Parliamentary and Assembly elections". Indeed, the Modi wave is sweeping Jammu province and certain other parts of the state, including Ladakh region. This became more than evident on December 1, when BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi addressed a massive rally. More than one lakh people from the state participated in the rally and an equal number could no make it to the rally because of lack of space in the M.A. Stadium and because of the attempts on the part of the anti-BJP forces to sabotage the rally. On December 15, the people of Jammu province, cutting across political lines and religious denomination once again reposed their faith in Modi by taking part in large numbers across the state in general and Jammu province in particular by participating in the "Run for Unity". Both these events indicate the direction in which the political wind is blowing in Jammu province. Beig was right when he predicted doom for the Congress party. The problem of the Congress party is that it is not reading the writing on the wall. And if it continues to behave like this, it will suffer the worst ever defeat in Jammu province. It may even become a story of the past. |
