| A faction within Cong suggests understanding with PDP for Lok Sabha elections | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 16: Although National Conference leadership has been trying to enter into pre-poll alliance with Congress in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, a group within State Congress has suggested the high command to explore possibility to reach into some sort of understanding with opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for Lok Sabha elections. Congress leaders of the State are not interested for any pre-poll alliance with any party in Assembly elections but they want some under-declared understanding with PDP in the Lok Sabha elections to retain two Lok Sabha seats. Insiders in the Congress said that a group within the party has realised that due to strong Modi wave in the State especially in Jammu region, it is not possible to retain two Lok Sabha seats of Jammu province with the coalition of National Conference. "Party leaders have made it clear to the high command due to anti-incumbency and Modi wave, coalition is not going to retain the two Lok Sabha seats", sources said and added that party leaders wanted that party high command should approach PDP for help in Lok Sabha elections. Although PDP has already announced Yash Pal Sharma and Arhad Malik as party candidates for Jammu-Poonch and Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seats respectively, there is feeling among Congress leadership that in-case of both the parties arrive at an understanding PDP would withdraw its candidates. "A group within Congress has convened to the high command that in present situation it is very difficult to retain both the Lok Sabha seats", sources said. Congress leaders advocating for understanding with PDP have argued that PDP has made inroads in Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar districts. These areas hold the key for two Lok Sabha segments of Jammu province so Congress leaders have realised that support of PDP would help the party to get good number of votes from these belts. PDP, on the other hand, has intensified its campaign in these two segments. Party candidate Yash Pal Sharma has already covered first part of his campaign. Aggressive campaigning launched by the party for these segments is also a matter of concern for Congress. |
