Political parties heating up chilling winters in Kashmir
12/16/2013 10:43:25 PM
Bashir Assad

Srinagar, Dec16 : Even as the Valley is freezing, major political parties- through their election rallies- are making winter a bit hot. Surprisingly electioneering has started a bit early. The political experts believe that the early electioneering shall tax the nerves of the workers. "There may be less campaigning at a time when it is needed the most," they opine. The PDP has constituted three teams for campaigning, one headed by Mufti Muhammad Sayed, second by Mehbooba Mufti and the third by Muzaffar Husain Baig. The teams are seen campaigning across Kashmir. Mufti is camping in Jammu and is holding frequent public meetings in the region while as Mehbooba Mufti is campaigning in North Kashmir and Muzaffer Husain Baigh in South and Central Kashmir. Baig's vehement campaigning in South and Central Kashmir has taken both his friends and foes by surprise for the fact that his health does not permit him to go for campaigning in chilling winters.
Interestingly Mehbooba who is the party candidate from South Kashmir is campaigning in North while as Baig hailing from North is in charge South Kashmir. Mufti Muhammad Sayed is holding public meeting in Jammu region along expected lines for being familiar with the politics of Jammu and more-so for being the vastly acceptable leader in the region. On the other hand the ruling National Conference too started election campaign formally on December 5 by organizing a rally at Hazratbal, to mark the 108th birth anniversary of party founder and former chief minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah which according to observers was the first major show of strength by the party.
In the rally, attended by top party leaders, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, NC president Farooq Abdullah announced its candidates for all three Lok Sabha seats from Kashmir. A senior NC leader said the party recently restructured its youth wing to get them involved in party affairs. The youth brigade along with party leaders will work at grassroots level, listen to the grievances of cadres and people, and try to sort them out. "Our party leaders and cadres are conducting door-to-door campaigns to make people aware about the developmental schemes launched for welfare of the people," he said, adding that the party is also using "sports activities" as a means to reach the people. Omar, who is also NC's working president, has addressed rallies in sensitive Tral and Sopore towns in South and North Kashmir. As for the Congress party is concerned, its ministers from Kashmir valley are confined to their respective constituencies and are conducting extensive tours of the same to keep themselves relevant under the given scenario. The party is most likely to go have pre-poll alliance with NC, therefore, the party is not so active as yet.
