Cement pillar on middle of road death trap for vehicles

early times report
Jammu, Dec 16: Advertised as an important link to end daily chaos on Satwari-Amphalla road, but fifth bridge on river Tawi has failed to serve its intended purpose for which it was constructed by the state government.
In their hurry to complete the project and take credit, the J&K Project Construction Corporation (JKPCC), R&B departments have ignored the basic points to make the road leading to the bridge safe for the travel of vehicles. The broken cemented pillar in the middle of the road connecting warehouse area with the bridge has become a death trap for speeding motorists, especially during the night hours.
Though 500 meters long bridge has been completed in record time and was inaugurated by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in May, but officials said due to several design flaws and lack of wide road on Bhagwati nagar side it has failed in its purpose. The bridge has been constructed at the cost of Rs 93 crore and has been completed in record time of three years to provide an alternative route to the drivers moving towards Akhnoor, Muthi, Domana and district of Poonch and Rajouri.
Sources said that there was political pressure behind early completion of this bridge as this would benefit a senior minister who has land in Belicharana area. Reaching to that area in absence of this bridge is a costly affair as it takes around one hour and absence of public transport also makes it much difficult. "The minister ensured that work gets complete faster and reaching to his area gets easier. For this he put behind his all efforts and managed to get work done fast," sources added. "I don't know who proposed the plan for new bridge. But till now approach road on Bhagwati nagar stretch is not widened, people will continue to face problems. Further, it leads to jam near Canal road, as space to maneuvering vehicle is very small", said Rajesh Sharma, a resident of Canal road.
