Srinagar, Dec 25: The special operation group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police today arrested three LeT operatives from the old city in Srinagar, police sources said adding that by arresting the group the police has busted a module which was planning to carry out deadly attacks in the summer capital ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Sources said that acting on a special tip off, the SOG personnel in civvies got hold of three LeT militants during an operation in Dargah and Kadikadal areas of Srinagar city. Police sources said that the breakthrough in busting a LeT module was achieved on Tuesday evening when first the police personnel got hold of one LeT militant who has been identified as Lateef Ahmad of Chadoora from Dargah Hazratbal who then led the police team to arrest his two companions from Kadikadal area in down town in the evening. It merits a mention here that intelligence agencies had earlier informed the security agencies about the presence of militants in Srinagar who had sneaked into the city from North Kashmir to carry out deadly attacks on government forces.
Police sources said that Lateef and other two apprehended suspected militants in Kadikadil, later led police to Yechkoot village of Budgam resulting in an encounter. Meanwhile sources said that when Tata Sumo was stopped by SOG personnel near Kadikadal on Tuesday evening, one of the suspected militants tried to flee from the spot, police in civvies shot him in his foot by a pistol recovered from another militant's possession and then bundled both of them in the police vehicle and took them to some unknown destination.
"Police personnel in civvies stopped a Tata Sumo carrying 9 passengers near Kadikadal and caught hold of the two youth who were bundled into police gypsy," sources said. "Earlier, during the day a special unit of police had arrested Lateef Ahmad, a LeT militant from Hazratbal area," police sources said, adding "Lateef led police to Kadikadil after preliminary interrogation." Sources said the arrested militants led the police to Budgam to effect arrest of their companions hiding their.
However, the militants holed in the cordon managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness, sources said.
Meanwhile a high alert has been sounded by the police in Srinagar city after the inputs from the intelligence agencies about the presence of militants in the city. "Following the intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in Srinagar city high alert has been sounded and the security agencies have intensified search operation in many areas" police sources told Early Times.
"Police has raised nakas on all sensitive roads in Srinagar and frisking of vehicles and pedestrians has been intensified, said the police sources.
Frisking was carried out in the parts of the city including Lal Chowk, Hari Singh Sigh Street, Batmaloo, Khralkhud, Maisuma, GPO road, Iqbal Park and Dalgate where civilians were being made to stand in queues and asked to produce identity cards.
