Srinagar, Dec 25: The Congress on Wednesday termed 1975--Indira-Sheikh Accord as a final substantiation of Jammu and Kashmir's relation with the Union of India.
Senior Congress leader and deputy chief minister Tara Chand, scoffed of the National Conference (NC) for squawking about Autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir, saying the 1975 accord was reached between the towering leadership of Jammu and Kashmir and the country.
"Late Indira and Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah were tall leaders of the state and the country and they represented the will of people. So the accord reached between them in 1975 is full and final which leaves no justification for seeking any further concessions," the senior Congress leader said.
Few agreed conclusions of the 1975 accord included that Jammu and Kashmir shall, in its relation with the Union, continue to be governed by Article 370. According to this accord, Parliament will make laws preventing activities directed towards questioning sovereignty and territorial integrity of India.
The agreement also said the provisions of the Constitution of India already applied to the State of Jammu and Kashmir without adaptation or modifications are unalterable. This agreement was reached between the two leaders after Late Abdullah's 22 years of estrangement from mainstream politics.
On pre poll alliance between his party and the National Conference for the forthcoming parliamentary elections, Chand said that Congress being a national party and its decisions are taken by the high command in Delhi. "Sofar I think no formal decision has been taken in this regard."
The deputy chief minister was also optimistic that Congress will emerge as single largest party in the forthcoming assembly elections in the state. Asked about the performance of the present dispensation, the deputy chief minister said: "As far as I know we have been delivering to the best of our capacities. But people always expect high from any government and we too want to give our best to the people. As far as the functioning of our coalition goes, let me tell you that is running smoothly."
The deputy chief minister said that education, health sector, power supply, safe drinking water, social welfare schemes, infrastructure building, exploiting tourism potential, agriculture and employment generation have been the priorities of the present coalition government and many achievements have been recorded in the respective fields since the formation of the government in 2009.
