| Police use force against people demanding Tehsil status for Wagoora in Baramulla | | Teargas shelling, lathi-charge leads to injuries to 13 persons | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Dec 28: Police used force and resorted to lathi-charge and teargas shelling on people at Wagoora in North Kashmir's Baramulla district who were carrying out protest demonstration against the placement of a Tehsildar for Kreeri in the same district. Reports reaching here said that 13 persons including four women got injured in the police firing. The protesters are demanding cancellation of the government order while citing the reason that Tehsildar should be placed for the Wagoora village and not for Kreeri since the latter village is small as compared to the former one. The government order of placing the Tehsildar for Kreeri has led to anger and resentment among the nearby villages. Inhabitants of around 15 villages are up in arms against the government order. These people are demanding immediate revocation of the order which according to them is partisan and un-justified. The protesters chanted slogans against the state government and said that Kreeri village cannot be granted status of a Tehsil as it fails on different parameters. They said that since Wagoora village is bigger in size it is fit to be given Tehsil status. They warned of agitation if the government did not revoke its order and said that government would be responsible for consequences thereof. Reports said that one of the injured identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Lone received injuries in his nose after being hit by a teargas shell. The police action has come in for sharp criticism from the people who say that cops went berserk who were protesting against a simple administrative order. The protesters said that the protest was peaceful adding that the police action was totally uncalled for. The agitated people said that Cabinet Sub-Committee (CSC) formed by the state government for creation of administrative units has recommended for Tehsil status to Wagoora and not Kreeri. They said the recent government order is biased and taken on political considerations rather than aspirations of a larger population. The protestors blocked the traffic and clashed with police after police personnel tried to disperse them. Reports said that police fired scores of tear smoke shells on people in order to disperse them. The police action led to injuries to more than one dozen persons thus leading to anger among the masses. They raised strong protest against the police action and demanded immediate and strong action against police personnel who carried out the 'atrocities'. It would be in place to mention here that granting of Tehsil headquarters has brought people of Kreeri and Wagoora at loggerheads over the past few years. In 2007, then PDP-Congress coalition government granted Tehsil status to Kreeri despite the fact that the area doesn't have any civil administrative office. The order was kept in abeyance following massive demonstrations at Wagoora which fulfilled all requirements for Tehsil including Naib-Tehsil office, Block Development Office and other administrative units. |
