JAMMU, Dec 28 : Realizing that it will be impossible for the party to become part of any government in J&K, the BJP is devising strategy to shun its hardcore image to accommodate some ethnic groups to expand its base.Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's speech during the December 1 rally was first step in this direction. Modi in his address had tried to woo Gujjars and Shias by highlighting plights of these two ethnic groups in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources in the BJP said that party has already decided to expand its base among Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir so party has identified Shias and Gujjars. As part of new strartegy the party with the support of Shias and Gujjars, would try to get more than 20 seats in the next Assembly elections to become part of the government. Sources said that party has already identified 24 winnable assembly seats but with the support of Gujjars and Shias this number can be reached to 38. "We are hopeful that BJP would form next government at Centre so after formation of BJP government at Centre we will also try to become part of next government at J&K", a senior BJP leader said, who do not want to be identified, and disclosed that a senior Gujjar leader of the State is already intouch with the BJP leadership. After Gujjars, Shias are next target of BJP. Narendra Modi had raked up discrimination issue with Shias to reach to this section. BJP had earlier vociferously highlighted atrocities on deprived and subjugated Shias of Pakistan occupied Gilgit-Baltistan on different platforms at national level so as to woo Shias of Kargil who have ethnic, cultural and religious similarities with the residents of Gilgit-Baltistan. Some prominent Shia leaders of Kargil had held a meeting with national BJP leaders a couple of months back when atrocities were going on Shias as Gilgit Baltistan. Even some religious leaders of Kargil were also in touch with BJP leaders. Sources in the BJP said that high command has asked state unit of BJP to prepare a blue-print for alliance with Shias and Gujjars to expand base among these two ethic groups of Muslims.
