| Congress in deep trouble | | Controversy | | Neha JAMMU, Jan 10: The Congress has lost its way in Jammu and Kashmir like rest of the country. It has turned so clueless that it has started raking up issues which have the potential of causing unrest in Jammu province on an unprecedented scale. That they are left with no issue to win over the alienated people of Jammu province could be seen from the fact that it has started toeing the line of those who want to de-link the Muslim-majority areas of Jammu province and facilitate the task of those in Kashmir who have been trying their best to establish Greater Kashmir comprising the Kashmir valley and the Muslim-majority areas of Jammu province and Ladakh region. They are doing it at the peril of the Congress itself, especially where the Congress used to have some dependable support-base - the support-base that helped the Congress capture both the Lok Sabha seats in Jammu province in 2004 and 2009. The demand of the communal elements in the Congress seeking an autonomous hill council for the non-existent Chenab valley clearly suggest that they do not know the implications of what they are demanding. They should know that the proportion of Hindu and Muslim population in the three districts of Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts is 45:55. In other words, both the communities in these areas are almost evenly balanced. 45 per cent of population in an area just cannot be described as a minority. Besides, the entire minority community is intensely India and the same is true of the majority community, minus a few disgruntled elements here and there. Bulk of the majority community in these areas is fully aware of the fact that it has failed to get what it deserved because of the hostile attitude of the Kashmiri leadership towards it. It's true that religiously they are the same, but they should not take this aspect to mean a unifying factor. Had this been the case, Bangladesh would not have become an independent and sovereign country out of Pakistan in 1971. Similarly, the proportion of Hindus and Muslims in the Rajouri district is evenly balanced. The proportion is almost 50:50. And it houses people majority of whom is for India. Take, for example, the Gujjar community. It has not supported and will not support the idea of Greater Kashmir because they know the extent of damage the Kashmiri leadership has done to it. Besides, it is ethnically, culturally and economically different from the ethnic Kashmiri people. The community knows India is the only country in the entire world that has entitled it to reservation in the Government jobs and educational institutions and that there is not a single Muslim country in the world that grants a special treatment to any Muslim community on whatever ground. These are some of the hard realities and the sooner the votaries of greater Kashmir in the Congress recognize them the better it would be for them, the Congress party, the people of Jammu province, the state and the country as a whole. It is time for Congress MPs Madan Lal Sharma and Lal Singh and Ministers like Tara Chand, Sham Lal Sharma, Raman Bhalla, Manohar Lal and others to assert their position and neutralize the baneful influence of Congress leaders like G M Saroori. It's a positive development that certain Congress leaders have taken cognizance of the atrocious demand of Saroori and others, but this is not enough. They need to go public and counter the dangerous demand. |
