| General Singh unlikely to be summoned | | | early times report Jammu, Jan 17: The privilege committee of Legislative Committee is unlikely to call former army chief General (Retd) VK Singh to appear before it. The Congress high command has reportedly told Omar Abdullah that summoning a retd army chief could have averse political effect for the party at the national level. "The party high command had been apprised about the matter. High command has communicated to Omar Abdullah that calling General who is showing inkling to BJP will give another handle to the party (BJP) and this is the last thing the party wants," said a senior Congress leader. The Congress is also of the view that summoning a retired General would not only hurt the feeling of army personnel , including ex-servicemen, who are in large number in Jammu, but also of the common man. It is for this reason that the committee has decided to do rethinking on the summons issued to General to appear before it on Jan 22. "The NC was adamant even then to issue warrant to him but was desisted for the same. NC members cajoled and then misled a Congress member in the committee after which summon was issue. But after some serious thinking and on the directions of the party, the Congress members of the Committee decided not to call General at all," said a Congress Minister. Congress has told the party high command that NC is raking up the issue just for petty political reason and nothing more. "Some NC leaders from Jammu, presenting themselves as more loyal than the King, but with vested interests, are hurting the sentiments of the people of the Jammu to emerge as the champions of the rights of the people of Kashmir. These leaders are playing games," said Congress minister. Congress has already shown its displeasure over calling General which PCC president Saif-ud-Din soz publicly opposing the summoning of Gen VK Singh. |
