| Demand of hill district gaining momentum in Bani, Basholi, Billawar | | Issue likely to be poll plank in hilly areas of Kathua | | Early Times Report KATHUA, Jan 16: To save the coalition from collapse, leadership of both National Conference and Congress has been trying to workout a respectable solution on the controversial issue of creation of new administrative units but demand of carving out a separate hill district from the existing Kathua district is gaining momentum. While interacting with the members of the Cabinet Sub-Committee (CSC), all Jammu based parties including Congress, BJP and Panthers Party have raised this demand at Jammu and Kathua. Creation of new hilly district is likely to be a big political issue in coming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in three Assembly seats of Kathua district namely Bani, Basholi and Billawar. After Leh, Kathua is the only district in Jammu and Kashmir which is spread in an area of more than 200 kilometers and this is the main cause of the backwardness of this region. Political parties observing that there was no logic to keep hilly areas with the Kathua- which is located over 90 kilometers away from Basholi. People have reason to raise this demand because Sarthal-the last spot of Kathua district is located more than 200 kilometers away from the district headquarters and those formulating development plans for the district are not aware of the ground realities. Creation of separate district for hilly areas would accelerate developmental activities. |
