Defeating divisive ideas of Chenab Valley, Pir Panchal
Duty of Congress

JAMMU, Jan 17: Those who want to disintegrate Jammu province and establish Greater Kashmir have ganged up. The disturbing aspect of the whole situation is the common cause certain senior Congress leaders like G M Saroori made with the anti-Jammu elements. Saroori has even gone to the extent of submitting a memorandum to the Cabinet Sub-Committee on new administrative units demanding establishment of one autonomous hill development council for Ramban, Kishtwar and Doda districts. He called it Chenab Valley which doesn't exist at all. Similarly, certain Congress leaders of Poonch and Rajouri districts too have from time to time toyed with the idea of an autonomous hill development council for the so-called Pir Panchal region, which also doesn't exist.
It is a different story that certain Congress leaders in Jammu have taken an exception to the sinister move of the NC to divide Jammu province on communal lines. Some prominent Congress leaders have reportedly said that "demands for creating autonomous hill development councils for the non-existent Chenab Valley and Pir Panchal were first pushed by former Chief Minister late Sheikh Abdullah and Omar is following the same". "This is what Sheikh Abdullah had tried to do. He first mooted this proposal as part of the Greater Kashmir move. It's aimed at changing the demography of the Jammu region along religious lines. The move was opposed by then party high command. Now again Omar is trying the same," reportedly said a Congress leader only a few days ago.
They were right. It's true that Sheikh Abdullah was a votary of Greater Kashmir comprising Kashmir and Muslim-majority areas of Jammu province and Cold-desert Ladakh. It's also true that his successors too have from time to time tried to achieve what Sheikh Abdullah couldn't achieve. These are well known facts. Besides, the Samajwadi Party has been consistently demanding creation of an autonomous hill council for the so-called Chenab Valley. It is all too well known. It is indeed a positive development that certain Congress leaders have recognized that the demands for autonomous councils for the so-called Chenab Valley and Pir Panchal are dangerous. But it is just not enough. They have to make this a big issue and take it up with party high command in Delhi so that it intervenes and does soothing concrete to defeat the move. Mere statements and that too made on the condition of anonymity are not going to help them defeat the divisive forces. They have to go public and enlist the support of the people to achieve their objective. And they will enlist the people's support in no time as the latter are opposed to the division of Jammu province under any pretext.
