Lal Singh declares his and another Congress leader's candidature for Lok Sabha polls himself
Voters at receiving end

JAMMU, Mar 4: Congress MP from Kathua-Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency on Monday declared his candidature for the same Lok Sabha constituency himself, notwithstanding the fact that the Congress Parliamentary Board is still to meet to finalize the names of candidate for two Lok Sabha constituencies in Jammu province and the lone constituency in Ladakh region. Lal Singh has been representing this constituency in the Lok Sabha since 2004. He not only announced his own candidature but also the candidature of another sitting MP Madan Lal Sharma, who has been representing Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha constituency since May 2004. "It is Choudhary Lal Singh and Madan Lal Sharma who will contest the Lok Sabha elections again (in Jammu division) and both will win. We have (Devender Singh) Rana (of National Conference) in our support and another Rana (Jatindra Singh Rana of BJP) in our opposition. I will ride on their shoulders," he said while addressing a public gathering in Jammu after Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad inaugurated the so-called Super Specialty Hospital by he told the gathering. The manner in which he made this announcement suggested that the Congress high command is not in the driver's seat and that certain Congressmen could conduct themselves in the manner they like openly or otherwise. The Congress MP not only made a mockery of the Congress Parliamentary Board, but also hit out at voters. He claimed that electorate demand liquor and vehicle and put forth other illegal demands during the election period. "People call politicians thieves. You (voters) should first analyze yourself. During elections, some people demand liquor and others vehicles. When we criticize such practices, they don't vote. Rich people don't vote at all," he said, and added that the administration handed down to the people by the NC-Congress coalition is "incompetent" and responsible for the "lapse" of funds and that there was the need to tighten noose around it. "In Ko Chabi Laganay Ki Zaroorat Hai," he was quoted as saying. So he said four things: He and Madan Lal Sharma are the Congress candidate for the forth coming Lok Sabha elections in Jammu province, voters demand liquor and vehicles and make other illegal demands, the Congress and the NC are one and the state government is incompetent. Ignore the first and third statement and consider the second and the fourth. Who will vote for the Congress when he himself says that the NC-Congress coalition has failed to hand down a competent administration and that the voters are blackmailers and so on. Similarly, why should the people vote for the Congress candidates when they divide their constituency on purely religious lines? Take, for example, what another Congress MP said a day before in Jammu. He said the Congress alone could safeguard the interests of people of Jammu and Pir Panjal region. They are simply making the task of their arch political rivals easy in the Jammu province by making controversial statements and that too on the eve of the crucial and make or break general election.
