| Veeri's son on cover of environment committee report, LC suspends official | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Mar 4: Having taken his son for joy ride despite being on an official tour, National Conference (NC) MLC Dr. Basheer Veeri managed to get his son's photograph on the cover page of the report of the study tour of the committee on environment. Veeri was Chairman of the Environment Committee which visited States of Tamil Nadu, Andaman Nicobar and Maharashtra for a study tour. The report was tabled recently in both houses of the State legislature. A virtually surprised Chairman Amrit Malhotra ordered an in-house inquiry to find out how the photograph got printed on the cover page of the report. Not only cover page, a group photo taken inside the legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu has Congress MLC Rani Gargi Billowria with her hands on the shoulders of Veeri's son. Another photograph on page 14 has seemingly Veeri's son standing near a bush with Cellular Jail of Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar in the background. Though it could not be ascertained from the Chairman Amrit Malhotra whether MLCs are allowed to take their children along on official tours and then, not only get photographs clicked but even displayed in the official report but it has been learnt that an official has been suspended for the goof-up. Sources said that when the Chairman was apprised about the happening, he ordered an in-house inquiry. They added that inquiry revealed involvement of an official namely Mohammad Akbar Wagay and some guidance of another officer Additional Secretary Mohammad Maqbool Bhat. Sources disclosed that Wagay has been placed under suspension for having been careless and allowing the photograph to get published on the cover page of report. According to sources in the legislative council, when the report had been sent to Government press for printing, there was no photograph on the cover page. They added "without intimating the higher officials, the two officials in connivance with a third person, who is being identified went to the Government press on their own and got the photographs printed on the cover of the environment committee report." They added that the cover of the report was like other reports, plain and simple. "If we would have wanted to use a photograph, we could have used some other. Council is not to promote someone's family. We are serious about what has happened and would not leave the ones involved unscathed. They would be reprimanded," said an official while adding that they are still probing. |
